There are few things in this world I love more than the Muppets, but a feminist Muppet? I definitely love that more.
Last week, international celebrity, best-selling author, and fashion icon Miss Piggy received a Sackler Center First Award from the Elizabeth A. Sackler Center for Feminist Art at the Brooklyn Museum. The prestigious award is presented to women who have broken barriers and charted changes in all disciplines and areas. Past honorees include Associate Supreme Court Justice Sandra Day O’Connor, Toni Morrison, Jessye Norman, Susan Stroman, and Julie Taymor, to name a few.
In a piece for TIME, Miss Piggy writes about her newest honor and definitively states “moi is now and has always been an ardent feminist and champion of women’s rights.”
In the article, Miss Piggy challenges the standard ideas of what it means to be a feminist, which is fitting seeing as Miss Piggy is anything but a typical gal. She writes, “I believe that any woman who refuses to accept society’s preconceived notions of who or what they can be is a feminist. I believe any woman who is willing to struggle, strive — and if necessary learn karate — to make their mark in the world is a feminist. And, yes, I believe that any woman, who cares about her appearance, her star billing and most especially her percentage of the gross, is a feminist.”
Throughout the recent media blitz for the Muppet Show reboot, Miss Piggy and her long-time partner Kermit have been asked about the role that feminism will play in the upcoming show. Kermit is quick to assure everyone that “Miss Piggy covers feminist themes wherever she goes.” This is certainly the truth. Miss Piggy has always embodied what it means to be a feminist, even if she did it in an atypical fashion. Miss Piggy concluded her TIME article by saying, “feminism’s future must be proud, positive, powerful, perseverant, and, wherever possible, alliterative. It must believe in itself, share its triumphs, overcome its setbacks and inspire future generations. I must, in other words, be a lot like … moi.”
Congratulations, Miss Piggy! After over 40 years of kicking ass and being true to yourself, you deserve this awesome honor.
