Celebrate! The day began in 1992 when Mary Evans Young, a British feminist, decided something needed to be done about eating disorders and the huge diet industry. The point is to raise awareness of fat-phobia and size discrimination; fight the idea of the ''right'' or ''ideal'' body shape; fight the diet industry; and honor the victims of eating disorders and weight loss surgery. The blog Body Love Wellness has a post listing 16 reasons not to diet (ever). Some include: -Diets have a 90-99% long-term failure rate. -The...

We all know that the way the criminal system deals with rape is inadequate, to say the least. But Nicholas Kristof's 'Is Rape Serious?' op-ed in The New York Times on April 29 opened my eyes to just how dismal the situation really is--and to the fact that we need to do something about it. When a woman reports a rape, she usually submits to an extensive examination, an ordeal Kristof describes like this: 'She is typically asked to undress over a large sheet of...

The video above is a PSA created by Audacia Ray and the participants of the first Speak Up media training workshop for current and former sex workers as part of New York's Sex Work Awareness, a media and public education advocacy organization. This is what Audacia has to say about Speak Up. 'Though talking to the the media is definitely not for everyone and should be approached with caution by people who work in the sex industry, I think it's important to prepare people for battle....

GEMS - Girls Education and Mentoring Services - is turning 10! That's right, a whole decade of helping teenage girls of New York City who are victims of sexual exploitation and domestic trafficking. They've been offering outreach, intervention, court advocacy, therapy, development and education to young women affected by exploitation. GEMS has caught the attention of celebs like Demi Moore and Ashton Kutcher, Ellen DeGeneres and Diddy (that's his name this week, right?). To celebrate their milestone year, GEMS will be hosting a 10th birthday party...

Good news on the reproductive rights front - the FDA lowered the minimum age to buy OTC Plan B to 17. It was 18. One year may not seem like a big difference, but it would be to a 17-year-old who is panicking and wondering what she's going to do because she realized a condom broke or she had a moment of poor judgment and didn't use one. Now might be the time to keep on reminding people that Plan B is: -Not an abortion. It is...

Former president of the National Woman's Party Elizabeth Chittick passed away last week. She was 100 years old. Chittick was a revolutionary of many firsts for women: civilian administrator of the U.S. Naval Air Station in Seattle, Washington and Banana River, Florida, registered representative of the New York Stock Exchange, and revenue collections officer with the Internal Revenue Service. Chittick also became the first woman invited to speak at the House of Representatives in Oklahoma. She was an advocate for the Equal Rights Amendment and served...

Reading through our BUST Myspace page invites can prove a daunting task for us 'terns at the mag; going through club flyer after club flyer...and bday invites from peeps who rented out a club for their party (no kidding, we get a LOT!), until, of course, there's an event that speaks to us enough to tweet , hot date, research and blog about. The Feminist Porn Awards was one such invite. Hosted by Good For Her, the annual Feminist Porn Awards (in their 4th...

I'll cover my mouth so I don't get rage all over my computer screen. This makes me so mad I can barely put words together. Fortunately, Kate Harding put plenty of words together on the topic that say everything I am thinking much better than I could. United is instituting a policy that would kick people off a full plane if someone on the staff decides they are too fat. Oh, and after they are kicked off and unnecessarily forced to wait, then they will...
