Feminism

Perhaps there are some of you out there who, like me, still don't quite know what "zine" means. No worries, here's a quick explanation: "zine" (pronounced zeehn) is short for magazine, but that doesn't fully capture the spirit of a zine. To use the words of NYC Feminist Zinefest, a zine is "like a small, pocket-sized emissary of ideas".  But these definitions will only get you so far. This Saturday, February 25th, at the Brooklyn Commons, come experience feminist zine culture for yourself! There will be presentations to listen...
V-Day 2013 is a year away. That's enough time for you, me, Eve Ensler, and a billion of our friends to rise together to end violence against women. Personally, I've loved Ensler's work for the past 4 years, ever since I was a Florida State Women’s Center volunteer that worked the door at a showing of the Vagina Monologues. I cringe now when I remember texting my friend, “Why do 'radical feminists' use the word vagina all the time? So uncomfortable.” That night I learned how...
The GOP debate audience may be one of the most interesting characters in this primary election cycle. They kind of remind me of an old-timey angry mob, unabashedly reveling in their hatred.  So far they've conspired the death of a hypothetical uninsured man, booed an active duty soldier for being openly gay, and cheered wildly at the mere mention of the death penalty. I wouldn't be surprised if one of these days the camera panned around to show the crowd holding pitchforks and torches. At...
This weekend’s episode of SNL was perhaps the best of all season, with a lineup that seemed ripped from the pages of BUST (plus plenty of killer cameos…and one by Bill O'Reilly?) and a distinctly female energy (no doubt stemming from host Maya Rudolph’s presence) that felt like a breath of fresh air—or a gasp for fresh air after laughing so hard at Rudolph and Kristen Wiig’s frozen-chicken-fondling, golf-cart-driving, accent-switching antics in the “Secret Showcase” sketch.  The always-welcome and always-wonderful Amy Poehler stopped by to...
When Brittany Molina, a student at Brigham Young University, was standing around campus on Valentine's Day in a not-even-remotely-revealing floral dress, cardigan, opaque tights, and boots, a random male student handed her a note. She thought it would be something innocuous--you know, like a freakin' Valentine--but she opened it up to find an admonishment of her outfit. Somebody's peepee must have been tingling too much at her exposed, uh, neck. And...fingers.   The note, which Molina posted on Twitter (along with a picture of her outfit) read: “You...
This picture aptly summarizes precisely what is wrong with the on-going reproductive rights debate in America. This is a panel put together by Republican Rep. Darrell Issa, chairman of the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee which is holding a circus hearing titled “Lines Crossed: Separation of Church and State. Has the Obama Administration Trampled on Freedom of Religion and Freedom of Conscience?” today. Notice how not a single person on this first panel has a uterus? This group of men consists of a Catholic...

Add Virginia to the list of states where lawmakers want to make it easier to be a fertilized egg than a woman. Rather than focusing on education or job creation in light of the worst recession since the 1930's, yet another state legislature has turned its energy and resources against our inalienable right to choose what happens inside our own bodies.    The Virginia House of Delegates passed two controversial anti-choice bills, sending them to the Senate. HB 1, the so-called "personhood" bill is frankly terrifying: it...
Fox News contributor Liz Trotta recently spewed a very hateful and contemptible rant against women in the military that will leave you angered and confused. When asked to comment on changes in the Pentagon's policies towards women that may put them in jobs closer to the front line of warfare, Trotta thought it was a great opportunity to re-victimize victims of military rape, hint that sexual abuse is expected in the military, and blame "the feminists" for federal overspending: ...And the feminists have also directed them, really, to...
Earlier today the White House announced a new compromise on the controversial Affordable Care Act. In a press conference, President Obama announced a change of course meant to satiate embroiled Catholics and conservatives who felt elements of the new law were a violation of conscience. Namely, the part where employers (even those with religious affiliations) must provide employees with insurance including contraceptives.  "No woman's health should depend on who she is or where she works," President Obama said.   The modified plan will allow employers...
Yesterday the Pentagon announced new measures that will bring women serving in the military closer to combat than ever before. With the new policy implemented, women will be able to fill thousands of jobs, including medics, intelligence officers, and helicopter pilots, previously reserved for men only. Women have been allowed to serve in these positions at the brigade level since 1994, but this new policy assigns women to the battalion level, which is much smaller and more likely to see direct combat.  Women are still...
