Feminism

Before you read this, I need you to do something. Go to Rick Perry’s Facebook page and read the comments on the top photo on his wall. Go on, it’s right here. I’ll wait. Yes, that’s correct: in an inspiring and hilarious show of solidarity, women have taken to Republican Governor Rick Perry’s Facebook page to describe (in full detail) their menstrual cycles, use of birth control, and general vajayjay status reports. Because he’s obviously presented himself as an authority on the female body. I've selected...
On our way out of the BUST office this past Friday afternoon, interns Maura, Ginny, and I were remarking on the difficulties of feminist blogging, namely that “We can only say ‘I hate Rush Limbaugh’ so many times!” Since calling Georgetown Law student Sandra Fluke a slut, Limbaugh's been all over the news because of his ludicrous defense of his actions, and buzz has continued over the number of advertisers who've dropped his show. I’m certainly not the only one who’s totally sick of hearing about...
We reminded you last Friday that International Anti-Street Harassment Week is this week. Hope you're all fighting back in whatever way suits you best: blogging, a well-placed status update, or speaking out on the streets in safe and responsible ways. Permanent Wave, the rad feminist collective of artists and activists based in Brooklyn, shared this video in honor of the Stop Street Harassment campaign on their Tumblr: [video:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5P4eVjwVd_U&feature=player_embedded 425x344] While the S**t Whoever Says meme is (thankfully) on its way out, what is interesting about this video's approach...
It would appear that Rick Santorum, of all people, now considers himself an advocate for women. In a statement released on his campaign website, he says the United States is “suffering a pandemic of harm” because of the rising prevalence of pornography on the Internet. Not only does he seem to think that porn is “toxic” for healthy relationships and marriages, but he also thinks it contributes to “misogyny and violence against women.” As President, he promises to ban "hardcore porn" to combat injustices against women. Rick...
Anyone who's walked through NYC in summer time knows that street harassment is a huge problem. Even being relatively covered-up seems to invite unwanted comments from the male peanut gallery. Of course, catcalling and whistling are just the most innocuous in a long list of nausea-inducing behaviors that plague women worldwide, when it comes to street harassment. To raise awareness of the issue, the people at Stop Street Harassment have organized International Anti-Street Harassment Week, which begins on March 18 and ends March 24. This year's...
Get out the rag and polish ladies, because—as Frank Bass at Businessweek explained—"Women who want to earn more on Wall Street than their male colleagues have one reliable option. They can set up a shoe-shine stand in Lower Manhattan." That's because the only industry where women earn more than men (a whopping $1.02 to every dollar) is that of personal care and service. That is the one (one!) out of 265 major job categories where women can outearn their male counterparts. And it's another reason...

For of you who don’t know, today is Pi Day – the holiday celebrating the mathematical constant π (fun fact: it’s also the birthday of Albert Einstein!). Pi Day is celebrated a number of ways across the United States: discussions on the relevance of π, festivities honoring Einstein, and my personal favorite, excessive consumption of pie. But since I can’t give you all pie through the computer (though I wish I could – get on that technology, scientists!), in honor of Pi Day I present to...

Once again, women’s rights are under attack. The Medicaid Women’s Health Program, a health-care program for low-income women in Texas, is in danger of losing $35 million dollars of federal funding because Governor Rick Perry won't allow any of it to go to Planned Parenthood.  This program, which funds preventative care (including cancer screenings and contraception), currently serves 130,000 women by donating to many clinics in Texas--including Planned Parenthood. None of these clinics perform abortions, but Planned Parenthood does provide this service at other locations in...
I'm no Little Monster, but I do love Lady Gaga--almost as much as I love feminist history. The ladies at Soomo Publishing must have known that when they released this spoof of "Bad Romance," starring an actress playing legendary feminist Alice Paul. She implores the United States government to give women the vote while wearing a getup that combines her era's fashion with a very Gaga-esque full-face lace mask. The slickly produced video has "Bad Romance"-inspired visuals and lyrics that made me giggle: "Oh oh oh...
This weekend, The Daily Beast and Newsweek hosted their third annual Women in the World Summit. Among the many accomplished and inspirational speakers and panelists were Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, Facebook COO Sheryl Sandberg, Ms. Magazine founder Gloria Steinem, Nobel Peace Prize winner Leymah Gbowee, and many-Oscars-winning actress Meryl Streep. The sold-out summit took place at Lincoln Center's Koch Theater in New York, and managed to send Twitter briefly over capacity with the hashtag #wiw12. The Daily Beast has posted lots of clips of highlights...
