The NY Times today had an interesting article about how the early Earth may have looked. By studying crystals in Australian rocks, (pictured on the left), scientists have formed what they think is a more accurate picture of what Earth actually looked like, as depicted in the image on the right. Isn't it incredible? I had no idea that the Earth looked exactly like my trapper keeper I had in 3rd grade! All that's missing is a couple of dolphins or Orca whales jumping out...

While some may be wasting precious tv time (and brain cells) watching Britney's documentary tonite, I was thrilled to catch a show on a very different blonde entertainer, Miss Mitzi Gaynor in her interview special on PBS, called Razzle Dazzle: The Special Years. Perhaps I truly am a gay man trapped in a womans body, but for some reason, I just cant get enough of Mitzi and her outfits and dance moves. Most of the show was scenes from her 70's variety...

Shelby Lynne and her fantabulous band played at HIRO in NYC this past Friday night. They're finishing up a tour that started about a year ago for the press launch for Shelby's latest gem Just A Little Lovin'. This of course is Shelby's interpretation of selections from the late great Dusty Springfield's songbook. That show was all about the Dusty material. This time around Shelby framed some of her originals around Dusty's stuff and played an eclectic mix of these two great artists music. Shelby...

Why is this show so good? No matter what else is on, I will immediately dig into any episode, especially since it seems like it 's always on, airing on about every channel except PBS. Hugh Laurie is peculiarly attractive to me, even tho he's totally not my type. Just re-watched the episode where House gets shot and that other guys' balls explode on USA, and now I can just flip to Fox for more episodes, this is good tv, people, and plenty of it. photo...

Boss Hog, the punk rock spawn of Cristina Martinez and Jon Spencer will return for their first show in 8 years following a mini tour in Europe and performances at All Tomorrow's Parties.  Joining Boss Hog at the Bowery Ballroom on Dec. 17th is a full compliment of rhythm and grind, featuring the country punk moxie of Tennessee's Those Darlins , the titillating parade of burlesque goddesses Harvest Moon and Dirty Martini , and special guest DJ Nick Zinner of the Yeah Yeah...

Why am I writing to you about a comic called Battlefields? It's not just because of my deep and lasting love for the work of Garth Ennis, creator of Preacher, among many other excellent comics. It's because The Night Witches , a three-part miniseries, is the story of an all-female fighter pilot squadron in the Soviet Union during World War II. And yes, it's based on a true story. These women were given substandard planes and flew only at night, and faced horrible treatment from their own side...

New 'Jackie and Debra' video from one of my fav comedians, John Roberts! John is the BUST Boy du Jour for our upcoming December issue, be sure to check out my interview with him! If you're not familiar with John's work, you must watch his youtube vids here. The 'mom' videos are my personal favs. And if you haven't seen the first 'Jackie and Debra' video, do it here. ...

I still don't know what hit me, even two days after experiencing all that is a Quintron and Miss Pussycat show. The New Orleans-based art rockers (which essentially consists of a one-man band and a Maraca-playing backup singer) played Santos Party House, the NYC venue owned by previous BUST Boy du Jour, Andrew W.K. He was the host with the most Monday night, and did his best to hawk the $4 Budweiser specials to a packed house. Here he is, looking snazzy in what a...

What better way to depict the terrifying downward spiral of mental illness than in a graphic novel? Nate Powell 's story of a brother and sister dealing with schizophrenia is both heartrending and beautiful. Ruth and Perry are both haunted by visions and compulsions, but as they grow older one gets worse and one gets better. Powell's art captures the loss of control and the visions of the characters in surrealist black-and-white, rendering even a frog and the grandmother sinister and threatening. You need not have experienced...
