S.W. Basics makes skincare products from scratch, using only essential ingredients so that it's safe, even for sensitive skin types. Dedicated to ethical practices, the ingredients are either certified organic or Fair Trade, or they come from small, family-owned farms. We're very excited to have S.W. Basics as a vendor at our upcoming BUST Magazine Holiday Craftacular & Food Fair!
Founder Adina Grigore tells us more about the products:
Tell us about yourself!
Hi I'm Adina! I started S.W. Basics in Brooklyn, where we make all-natural skincare without any extra BS. Everything is five ingredients or less, ethically sourced, and sexy as hell. Oh plus it works.
How did you get started?
I studied holistic nutrition and worked as a personal trainer. I got into making products because I have insanely sensitive skin-- I can't use most products on the market, including the natural ones. I felt like the industry was dirty, greedy, and un-cool, so I decided to launch a brand! I've also been teaching workshops from the beginning, because learning about health should not be an exclusive luxury! It should be easy and fun.
What's inspiring you right now?
Russell Brand, Walter White (I know, I'm late to this party), throwing out all the junk I don't need and getting super organized, my sis who works for Urban Justice Center and fights so people can stay in their homes, and Brooklyn. Always Brooklyn.
Any advice for those starting out in the handmade industry?
Make sure you really really really love what you're doing, and make sure you add your own twist to your product. Don't make something that already exists, and don't expect overnight success. Be patient, if you really believe in it and it solves a problem or is super awesome, keep at it and it'll work... eventually.
What are you most looking forward to at the BUST Magazine Craftacular and Food Fair this year?
If you love S.W. Basics products as much as we do, be sure to drop in to one of their Sassy Skincare workshops at this weekend's BUST Magazine Holiday Craftacular! You'll learn to make custom body scrub and body oil from luxurious organic ingredients, perfect for the sensitive-skinned on your gift list.
They'll be teaching two classes on Saturday 12/14: one at 2:00 PM and one at 3:00 PM. Be sure to sign up in advance to secure your spot...space is limited!
It's all taking place on Saturday, December 14th and Sunday, December 15th at the Metropolitan Pavilion (125 West 18th Street, at 6th Ave.) in N.Y.C. The Craftacular will run from 10:00 AM to 7:00 PM both days.
BUST is one of the last remaining women-owned, independent feminist publications, and we need you. For 29 years we've been bringing our readers the unvarnished truth about women’s lives, both in print and online, but now, with print costs rising and advertising numbers dropping across the industry, we need your support to continue. If you dig what we do, please consider subscribing, renewing, or donating to keep us afloat. Every dollar helps. Thank you.
