As “a shapeshifter whose only mission is to experience humanity,” RuPaul has not only experienced but enhanced the human experience. Being a role model comes with pressure, but Ru exceeds all expectations. RuPaul's new book GuRu offers nuggets of worldly, every day, and glamazonian advice.
Here’s a peek at some special gems of genius:
1. Start your day the Ru way, with mindfulness and stillness.
RuPaul wakes up early every day to stretch, pray and meditate. He explains that his mind/body is a machine, and that this act of ritual helps “reset the machine, shut down the ego, and love myself.” His personal manifesto about resetting the machine by the act of humbly praying and centering yourself through meditation is both insightful and a direct guide on how to meditate at home.
2. “Stick with the ones who have vision.”
A simple sentence with a huge meaning: not only do you need to find yourself, but you need to find your community. That community better be fierce, hard-working, supportive and innovative—keep yourself surrounded by people that push you to be better and always look to a better future.
3. When in doubt about what to wear, wear something FABULOUS
RuPaul explains his drag look as “two parts Diana Ross, one part David Bowie, three parts Cher, and a heaping spoonful of Dolly Parton.” I mean, that really is the goal just all the time, right?
4. Now that you look fabulous, learn how to take a fabulous selfie from the master
“When in doubt, go for a three-quarter pose at the camera," RuPaul advises. "It’s an angle that captures the best of the cheekbones, the chin line, and a long neck.”
5. Practical advice can be life-saving
RuPaul offers all sorts of life-saving advice that's also practical. “When driving in the rain, always turn on your headlights” seems obvious, yet does anyone even use their blinker? And you'll never ruin your falsies again, thanks to the Ru method of “curl and mascara real lashes. Cut false eyelash strip into three pieces. With tweezers, dip fake lash pieces into glue and place on top of real lashes.”
6. Never forget: Drag is punk AF
RuPaul explains he got into the drag and punk scenes around the same time and describes how connected they are: “My drag is less about looking like a woman and more about saying F.U. to the cult of systematic masculinity." Nothing says punk like dismantling the patriarchy.
