While some people might celebrate becoming octogenarians with lunch buffets at Charlie Brown’s Steakhouse, Yoko Ono has something a little different in mind. Ono will be celebrating her 80th birthday with a concert at the Volksbühne in Berlin on February 17th.
Ono will be backed by the Yoko Ono Plastic Ono Band, led by her son Sean Ono Lennon. The legendary performer has been as active as ever these past few years, with #1 hits on the Billboard dance charts, the critically acclaimed album Between My Head And The Sky, a lively Twitter account, and collaborations with musicians like Eric Clapton, Lady Gaga, and RZA.
This concert will hardly be the first thing that Ono and her son Sean have collaborated on. This year, the pair launched Artists Against Fracking, a campaign to stop excessive drilling for natural gas and oil in New York state. Artists Against Fracking seeks to spread mass awareness about the dangerous practice and put a stop to it with peaceful action. More than 200 artists have aligned themselves with the cause, from Bonnie Raitt to Cindy Sherman. If you're interested in taking action or donating, hop on over to the Artists Against Fracking site for more information.
And if you, like many of us, will be unable to charter a private jet to Berlin for this most epic of birthday celebrations, here are some videos of Ono's work as a performance artist and musician to tide you over. Happy birthday to a brilliant activist, artist, and human being.
