Fred Armisen and Bill Hader are no Little and Big Edie, but their impersonation of these *staunch* characters (renamed Little and Big Vivvy) on the new IFC show Documentary Now! was nothing short of sublime. The series, which premiers tonight at 10pm, will bring you a different 20 minute fake documentary every week, parodying much-loved classics like Thin Blue Line and Nanook of the North as well as the shock-and-awe, gonzo-style annals of VICE Magazine’s hipster-journalist HBO docs. VICE has grown exponentially from its early punk magazine years, giving rise to niche, off-shoot websites like Noisey (for music fiends!), Vice News (for those who care about current events and global issues but hate the stuffiness of traditional outlets) and Motherboard (for lovers of tech and geekery!). But this week, VICE readers will notice a newcomer to the lineup: Broadly, a lady-centric news source for “women who know their place.” One word: YAAAASSS. Read More

So it's officially spring. Instead of celebrating in high-waisted shorts, we're having to celebrate with our jackets on and snacking on office take-out. But we aren't letting snowflakes get us down—we're looking forward to Netflix's new April titles (and the warmer weather that will hopefully follow).  Starting April 1st, Netflix will be removing some pretty longtime favorites: Mystic Pizza, Friday the 13th, Gentlemen Prefer Blondes, and Sense and Sensibility will all sadly, disappear from our queues. A new law in the UK states that young girls, who are at risk for undergoing female genital mutilation (FGM) in other countries, will have their passports confiscated. The law now places a legal responsibility on parents to keep their daughters from FGM, or face prosecution and potential jail time for committing a criminal offense.  Fahma Mohamed, an 18-year old female student who recently launched a petition in the UK for more information about FGM to be taught in schools, told VICE News that, “[People] need to realize that this is child abuse, and there are consequences.   This week the gaming community received national attention as the heated debate known as “Gamergate” exploded with explicit threats of rape and murder to various feminist critics. What is Gamergate? Essentially, it is an online debate concerning journalistic ethnics, the gaming press and the social responsibility that games may or may not have, but it is also deeply ingrained with issues of sexism, misogyny and threats of violence. If you're going to pick one, The Prettiots are just the band you would want to write a brutally honest ode to all the dummies you dated in high school. Made up of spunky front woman Kay Kasparhauser, Rachel Trachtenburg (of Supercute!) and Lulu Prat (Tangiers), the New York based band is a bit of uke-pop, indie, and pop rock rolled into one cute package, with some serious attitude.  The video for "Boys (I dated in high school)", directed by noted photographer Richard Kern, is nostalgic while it also pokes fun at all of Kasparhauser's jerk ex boyfriends. After forcing myself to read the entirety of the Vice article “Women of the Men’s Right’s Movement,” my brain is bubbling with so much anger and fury, I think it may just explode.  Just to clarify, this is the actual definition of feminism: “the belief in gender equality of the sexes.” And this is basically the Men's Rights Movement's definition of feminism: “A movement consisting of man-hating she-devils who want anarchy and the annihilation of the male species. It's easy to say that guys sometimes don't understand the struggle inherent in the female experience. They haven't had to endure the hardship, live in the carefully negotiated bodies we women occupy, or deal with the unfair boundaries society sets for us. And then I read something that suggests men might not be the only ones who are deluded. Mariel Loveland, a musician in the band Candy Hearts, recently wrote a piece for Noisey called "How to Survive Being the Only Girl in a Band. Read More
I guess we were overdue for a high-profile anti-feminist diatribe, huh? Well, looks like we have VICE Magazine co-founder Gavin McInnes to thank for the misogynistic tirade he gave during a Huffington Post liveblog last week. It only took a measly eight minutes for McInnes to prove he fears nothing more than a set of ovaries.  The wise and worldly McInnes stated that feminism has made women "deeply unhappy" and that all a woman really wants to do (scientifically, of course) is stay at home and pop out a few babies for her bread-winning man.
