“This Slut Votes!”…Do You?

by Diana Denza

In recent months, many of us have stared at our computer screens in collective horror at the attack on our reproductive rights. Amidst the misguided (and sometimes downright evil) attempts to keep women barefoot, pregnant, and oppressed, a Rush Limbaugh statement heard ‘round the world was born. The red-faced conservative huffed and puffed, and managed to offend half the population by stating:

“What does it say about the college co-ed Susan Fluke [sic] who goes before a congressional committee and essentially says that she must be paid to have sex — what does that make her? It makes her a slut, right? It makes her a prostitute.”

Sandra (ahem, ahem) was merely advocating for insurance to cover contraceptives. But little did this angry man know that his words were just what Jenna Soard needed to rev into action. As the founder of “My Body. My Business.” the 32-year-old has managed to open the dialogue surrounding women’s reproductive issues by providing comprehensive resources and ways to take action.

According to a press release, “Soard found her voice the moment Rush Limbaugh used the word slut.”  The organization launched soon after, in early 2012. And its very first national campaign, “This Slut Votes!” has taken social media websites like Facebook by storm. Apparently, Limbaugh offended a whole lot of sluts.

As part of the campaign, Soard has been donning a “This Slut Votes!” tee everywhere from Disneyland to Trader Joe’s this month. She posts public reactions and interviews with the folks she meets along the way on her blog. This badass chick is about two-thirds of her way through her 30-day stint, so I’d suggest clicking on over soon. As in, right now.

In case you’re wondering why Soard has actively labeled herself a slut, here’s her succinct explanation:

“Although the word ‘slut’ is considered one of the most offensive, derogatory names, we are using the term to prove a point. If this is how women needing care are being defined, we want those who believe this and want to take away our autonomy to know this ‘slut’ votes, and she will be heard at all levels of government.”

Want to play a part in this pivotal campaign for grrl power? Soard is encouraging all the sluts out there to stage similar campaigns and document their findings. Submit your videos here.
