THEESatisfaction is For You, Ladies

by Intern Kelsie

For ladies who love ladies, pop music can be kind of a downer. All the sexy divas sing about their boy toys and not about their gal pals (Katy Perry definitely does not count. I don’t care if she kissed a girl, nor if she liked it). Don’t get me wrong, I love Tegan and Sara just as much as the next grrrl. The Indigo Girls, too, have been known to provide some solid support in my times of desperate emotional need. Sometimes, though, the vibe I’m going for is less tragic-heartbroken-nostalgia and more get-your-booty-on-the-floor-and-shake-it.

When I started listening to the single “Queen Supreme” by THEESatisfaction, a disco ball descended from the office ceiling and a troop of dream girls on roller skates appeared and serenaded me with sick harmonies and killer beats (THIS HAPPENED, I PROMISE). Okay, in all honesty, I was hallucinating. After my dream girls dissipated, though, I was still left digging the music streaming through my headphones.

THEESatisfaction is comprised of self-professed gay feminist rappers Stasia Irons and Catherine Harris-White, and their songs offer a welcome alternative to the misogyny prevalent in much of mainstream rap. Female rappers often fall into the trap of trying to compete with their male counterparts on the level of masculinity; many seem to be trying to prove they can be as hard and as unrelenting as a man. With their soulful take on contemporary R&B, Seattle-based THEESatisfaction proves that women rappers have strengths all their own (and can also flow just as hard). As incentive, there’s a 75% chance that you, too, will hallucinate about hot chicks on roller skates while listening. If not, the ladies themselves are pretty fly as well.
