The Hole, a gallery in NYC run by Kathy Grayson, features contemporary art from the world’s most interesting emerging artists in an effort to fill the hole in the downtown community. Open to the public Wednesday through Sunday from 12-7PM, there is plenty of time to check out Jaimie Warren’s talent-packed new show That’s What Friends Are For, showing now through May 4th.
Jaimie Warren is a Kansas City/New York City artist, and was featured at the BUST and Superchief co-curated group art show, LADIES REPRESENT! this past August. Warren has been described as “an Internet-age sociologist,” as her work captures and benevolently mocks the modern worship of pop culture. That’s What Friends are For will be the debut of her brand new elaborate video remake of Fra Angelico’s High Altarpiece of San Domenico in Fiesole. Krystyna Printup said of the remake:
Each of the five panels [which make up the piece] is a tribute to personal cultural influences, selected by three generations of Warren’s family. Her grandmother’s selections include vintage entertainers like Betty Boop, Howdy Doody or Groucho Mark, with a few modern surprises like Liberace or JLo popping up, while her mother’s choices mix Pink Floyd, Tina Turner, Jim Morrison and Princess Diana, each character arranged as in the altarpiece painting. Warren’s panel of her favourite people is in the center where she appears as Missy Elliot in her famous garbage bag costume singing a duet with the possessed demon girl from The Exorcist. The portrait guide on the opposite wall in Gallery 2 will tell you who is who.
Her photo series “TotallyLooksLike.com” and “food’lebrities” will also be on display, in addition to and a new series of GIFS, which add a new layer of performance to her signature self-portraiture.

The Hole is holding an opening celebration and special performance for Warren’s show on April 18th, from 6-9pm, so mark your calendars!
