The Addams Family Musical

by Kelly McClure

For the past two days, I’ve been walking around singing “when you’re an Addams/Bababababababababa.” Which is half real song, and half nonsense because I can never remember the lyrics to anything. This little tune has been stuck in my head ever since I was lucky enough to be able to see The Addams Family: A New Musical the other night.

Having lived in New York for two years now, I’ve only been to two Broadway shows, and they’ve both been been musicals; which is funny because I’ve never really been a fan of them. I expressed interest in seeing The Addams Family because I’ve loved the show since I was little, and wanted the opportunity to see Nathan Lane perform. Being new to the Broadway scene, and theatrical productions as a whole, the magic of the set design and cast’s ability to do so much in such a small space, really amazes me. From the moment the house lights dimmed and the curtains opened to show the core cast of the show standing behind that familiar front gate of the Addams estate, I was putty in their hands.

For this production, Morticia Addams is played by Bebe Neuwirth, and Gomez is played by Nathan Lane. Neuwirth was stunning and perfect in the role, although at times I would get caught up on her voice and not be able to stop thinking of Frasier. Lane seemed completely at home on the stage and I am now happy to be able to say that I can see what all the fuss is about.

With all of the general camp and secretly pervy jokes of the original show, this production is a great way to hang out with a television family that I’m sure many of us miss visiting in black and white on a daily basis.
