Tammy Duckworth’s office announced that the Illinois senator’s daughter, Maile Pearl, was born yesterday—making Duckworth the first senator to give birth while in office. Though she served in the House of Representatives when she gave birth to her first daughter, Abigail, in 2014, Duckworth took maternity leave. F.B.I. Raids Trump’s Lawyer’s Office
Yesterday morning, F.B.I. agents raided Trump’s longtime confidant and lawyer Michael Cohen’s office for information related to Trump’s affair with and payments to Stormy Daniels, including records, emails, and documents. John Oliver Tackles Crisis Pregnancy Centers In Last Week Tonight Segment
On Sunday’s episode of Last Week Tonight with John Oliver, the host poked fun at “crisis pregnancy centers,” religious groups that aim to help pregnant individuals by pushing them not to go through with abortion. Between jarring quotes from anti-abortion activists like Abby Johnson (“The best client you ever get is the one that thinks they’re walking into an abortion clinic”) and satirical help from Oliver’s onscreen wife Rachel Dratch (“I tell women, if they get an abortion, it’ll make a ghost baby that will haunt your hoo-ha forever!”), he definitely gets at the manipulations and contradictions of these centers. Abortion Rights Group Files Lawsuit Against Mississippi
In related news, the advocacy group Center for Reproductive Rights filed a lawsuit on Monday, fighting on behalf of the state’s last standing abortion clinic, Jackson Women’s Health Organization. High School Student Told To Cover Her Nipples With Band-Aids
A 17-year-old student from Bradenton, Florida was told that she was violating her school’s dress code policy and “distracting” students—even though she was wearing a large, long-sleeved shirt. School administrators gave her four Band-Aids and insisted that she cover her nipples. It’s Equal Pay Day
Today is Equal Pay Day, the day that symbolizes how far into the year women have to work to make the same amount as men made the previous day. The day marks the average wage gap between women of all races, though it’s important to remember that black and Latina women experience a larger wage gap than white and Asian women. This year, HBO is stepping up: citing the Time’s Up movement and a push from Big Little Lies star Reese Witherspoon, HBO executive Casey Bloys is investigating pay gaps within each show and immediately fixing all disparities.
