Emily Lindin, like too many young girls, was bullied and shamed after being labeled the school “slut” during her preteen years. As an adult, she’d hear of the tragic stories of girls who’d committed suicide—Rehtaeh Parsons, Amanda Todd, Audrie Pott—after experiencing the same kind of suffering. So, in 2013, Lindin decided to do something to help: She wanted to show girls that though they may feel isolated or trapped, they are not alone. She started publishing entries from the diary she kept in middle school online, calling it The UnSlut Project. Read More

Last night I saw a band sing about slut shaming.  The band is called Hag Face and they stopped by Brooklyn on their “East Infection Tour.” On stage, they are four witchy, imposing blonde punks from Calgary who scream loud and play fast. The lyrics? “I fuck. I fuck. I fuck. I fuck.”    Image and audio via HAG FACE. Read More
Bullies are everywhere, whether they're on the playground as a kid, in the locker room as an adolescent, or even the person in front of you in line for Starbucks who’s giving the barista a hard time; bullies can feel completely unavoidable. But thanks to the unSlut project we now have a plan to not only conquer bullies, but also to celebrate and spread kindness instead of hate, and it all starts with confidence! (And no it does not include baking a cake of rainbows and smiles and wishing it were middle school again). Read More

It was your average summertime Friday night, when a lack of money and available activities led to another sweat-band-hair-tie-chillin-with-no-makeup-on movie night. After scanning through the available selections, my friends and I decided on “The To Do List”  the “Valentines Day”-esque movie, that seemed to feature a character from almost every single Emmy-nominated TV series.   Okay America, I HAVE HAD ENOUGH. I am sick and tired of you spilling your “religious convictions” all over my nice new pair of CIVIL RIGHTS. I got them in mint condition, on sale for an exceptionally reasonable price, and now, THANKS TO YOU, they are splattered with ridiculous restrictions, based on bad science and arbitrary **cough sexist cough** beliefs. (Sorry, I’m a bit allergic to bull shit. Read More
Imagine scrolling through your Facebook newsfeed seeing pictures of friends on vacation, funny videos shared - and your private medical records. For an Ohio woman, this invasion of privacy became a scary reality when the results of her STD test were posted to “Team No Hoes”, a Facebook group.    The woman’s ex-boyfriend is an employee at the University of Cincinnati Medical Center, where the testing took place. After the woman ran into him at the hospital, she refused to tell him why she was at the hospital. Read More
We all know how dangerous internalized misogyny can be. Patriarchal culture can often result in women doing and saying things that aren't very supportive of our fellow ladies. Like slut-shaming. Aside from being completely lame sauce, there is new evidence that this is not simply a gendered phenomenon.  According to a study published in the June issue of Social Psychology Quarterly, slut-shaming has less to do with sex and more to do with class.
