Sisters Are Doing it For Themselves

The U.N is celebrating the efforts of their female peacekeepers with a photography exhibition in its lobby through August 4th. While women only make up 8 percent of U.N police and 2 percent of their military, the U.N has officially recognized that since women bear the brunt of war, they should have more of a presence in the peacekeeping. It has been found that women and children feel more comfortable approaching female officers with their personal problems, and that female officers make more of an effort to facilitate U.N goals of community dialogue and maintaining human rights. One country that the exhibit focuses on in particular is Liberia, which now has a 125 member contingent of female officers from India.
