Romney Campaign Spells “America” Wrong, Internet Goes Nuts

by Intern Mary Ann

Mitt Romney won the Texas primary yesterday and with it officially surpassed the number of delegates needed to clinch the Republican nomination. Did you hear about that? Probably not, because Romney’s crack campaign staff managed to steal their own thunder yet again, this time with a spelling mishap for the ages. Instead of reveling in their newfound status as the official nominee, team Romney released a new photo-filter iPhone app called “With Mitt.” What would otherwise have been a relatively lame attempt at connecting with the technologically savvy crowd became a majorly mock-worthy moment when it was discovered that one of the filters reads “A Better Amercia.” Yes, you read that right. The campaign managed to spell America wrong and in the process set off quite the internet giggle fit. ‘Amercia’ was trending on Twitter this morning as everyone chimed in with their own, mostly snarky, uses of the new word and pondered the fate of the poor staffer who failed to catch the error (there was many a reference to campaign workers being strapped to the roof of a car). Tumblr, of course, has joined in the fun, producing a new, appropriately misspelled, blog that showcases the goofed-up filter paired with images Romney probably didn’t intend to become the faces of his campaign. Apple says it may take up to five days to correct the unfortunate mistake, so in the meantime, have at it internet humorists.
