Nick Cave’s Solo Tour Kills. Check Out Our Review Of His Recent NYC Show

by Michael Levine

The incomparable Nick Cave is presently in the midst of a solo tour throughout the United States. This past weekend he played three shows in NYC. One at Kings Theatre in Brooklyn and two consecutive nights at the Beacon Theatre. Accompanying himself on piano Cave performed selections from his vast catalog of material. Many songs he’d recorded with his backing band the infamous Bad Seeds as well as from his solo recordings and his side project Grinderman.

Cave fan favorites like “O Children,” “Higgs Boson Blues,” and “The Mercy Seat” received a stripped down treatment. Other more intimate numbers like “Into Your Arms” and “The Ship Song” captivated the adoring crowd who roared with applause throughout the evening. Before starting “Balcony Man” Cave dedicated the song to those sitting in that area and instructed those sitting in the upper regions of the theater to cheer whenever he sang the word balcony. Which they were more than happy to do and enthusiastically compiled at full volume. Colin Greenwood, on loan from the band Radiohead, supported Nick with his masterful bass lines which added to Cave’s piano ambience perfectly. Cave’s song subject matter can often be dark to say the least, but his on stage banter and interaction with the audience was both lighthearted and comical. This kept things rolling and added to the audiences all around enjoyment.
