Morrissey Cancels Memoir: Heaven Knows He’s Miserable Now

by Eloise Giegerich

Former frontman of The Smiths, fiercely loyal vegetarian, and generally enigmatic human being Morrissey has cancelled the publication of his memoir just three days before its anticipated September 16th UK release. A statement released by one of the singer’s fan sites, True to You, cites an apparent “last-minute content disagreement” with the memoir’s publisher, Penguin Books. A spokeswoman from Penguin has since stated that there would be no comment on the cancellation. The book, which would have explored Morrissey’s childhood adventures in Manchester, as well as his relationship with Smiths guitarist and writing partner Johnny Marr will now remain a mystery to the public, as no advance copies were made available for review, and the singer must now begin the search for another publisher.

This is only the latest setback for Morrissey, who has struggled this past year to successfully share with audiences his coveted brutally passionate and darkly honest (and frankly, freakin’ depressing—but in a good way) music. Because of poor health (a bleeding ulcer, Barrett’s Esophagus and double pneumonia), Morrissey failed to complete more than 20 shows in his North American tour, and later, due to lack of funding, was forced to cancel his South American tour—a tour whose dates had already been postponed after the singer and his team experienced a bout of severe food poisoning.

Hopefully Moz will be able to celebrate (or at least reflectively appreciate) the upcoming release (we hope) of his Hollywood High concert film, “Morrissey 25: Live From Hollywood High,” which will be out October 22 on DVD and Blue-ray. Check out the film’s trailer below:
