Miranda July and Artangel are teaming up to bring you clothes and culture in London’s Selfridges – an art show that is equal parts political statement and used clothing store. Miranda July is a recognized feminist author and artist, so it is no surprise she teamed up with Artangel. Both July and Artangel are known for their radical side and shock value art – Artangel is commonly known for unprecedented and unexpected locations for their art installations, so the Selfridges building is right up their alley.
Opening an art show that is also a full-fledged second-hand clothing store is out of the ordinary as it is, but on top of the fact that all the books for sale are for and by women, and that the prices of the clothing can range from 3$ to 3,000$ adds another layer of feminist baddass-ery. July is working with multiple organizations dedicated to helping those in need: Islamic Releif, Norwood, London Buddhist Centre and Spitalfields Crypt Trust. The interfaith, all accepting, ideology behind these groups was especially important to July and makes the entire art installation both diverse and definitely a safe space. July will be evenly distributing the proceeds to the four partnering charities – and each are donating 2.5% of their part to a separate charity of their choice.
It’s always exciting to see female artists use their voice and privilege to help better the world, which July discusses when explaining her motivation for the project on her website: “For many years I’ve wanted to make a store as artwork; utilizing the inherently participatory conventions of commerce. When I first came to London, in my twenties, the sheer number of charity shops giddily amazed me, but it’s only in creating this store with Artangel that I understand what a radically unique economic model they are.” The installation will be open to the public from August 31, 17 to October 22, 17 on the third floor of Selfridges, London UK.
