Kimbra’s “90s Music” Video is Mad Fly, Homeskillet

by Amy Carlberg

Whoa! What was that?! Kimbra’s music video for “90s Music” is 100% in the 21st century.

Internet commenters who lament the unoriginality of the new music video, directed by Justin Francis, probably didn’t grow up in the 90s or get the various pop culture references peppered throughout. You might say that making a video which spoofs or examines these things is unoriginal since the 90s are so trendy right now. But I think Kimbra is trying to explore our fascination with the 90s and nostalgia in general, while also owning up to an honest truth: Hey, we listen to 90s music. Don’t pretend like you don’t squeal and rush to the dance floor every time “Sorry Ms. Jackson” starts playing.

Whether you think it’s too much or just right, following the bouncing ball atop Kimbra’s lyrics makes it easy to sing along. What do you think of Kimbra’s “90s Music”? Leave a comment below.
