Horse Meat Burgers Across the Pond

by Amy Zimmerman

Independent testing has shown that a Burger King supplier in Ireland called Silvercrest has been stuffing its burgers with horse meat. Burger King commented, “Four samples recently taken from the Silvercrest plant have shown the presence of very small trace levels of equine DNA. This product was never sold to our restaurants.” Burger King alleges that they have terminated their partnership with Silvercrest, as Silvercrest promised them 100% British and Irish beef burgers (and clearly failed to deliver). This isn’t the first horsey scandal to hit the UK; British supermarket chain Tesco publically apologized last month for selling burgers that contained almost 30% horsemeat. While Tesco offered full refunds to all affected customers, I would be pretty disgruntled/ scared if I was a UK citizen, or a UK horse.

Justifiably spooked
