Happy 100th Birthday, Julia Child!

by Intern Scarlet

A very happy birthday to our favorite master of French cooking, Julia Child! Today marks what would have been the butter-obsessed chef’s 100th birthday, which is certainly reason to break out the cake, or, perhaps more appropriately, the chocolate soufflés.

Before finding her true calling as the iconic chef and TV personality, Child, a graduate of Smith, worked as everything from a copywriter and a top secret researcher for the OSS.  In addition to cooking up rich treats in the kitchen, Child also wrote several books, including Mastering the Art of French Cooking, which is still considered to be one of the best cookbooks around. Her TV show, The French Chef ran for 10 years and won her several Emmys, thanks to, not just her skills as a chef, but also her infectious personality.  She proved to still be an inspiration for women when, in 2002, Julie Powell started the popular blog “The Julie/Julia Project.” The blog was later turned into a film where Child was played by an actor you might have heard of, Meryl Streep.

Not only was Child an inspiration to anyone who has ever tried to turn on an oven, but she was also a model career woman. So, we give you this PBS remix. After all, what better way to celebrate the life of this extraordinary, trail-blazing woman than with an auto-tuned mashup of her cooking lessons?
