Handmade Nation

by Susan

If you haven’t heard of the incredible book Handmade Nation by now, then you are certainly missing out! Written by Faythe Levine and Cortney Heimerl published back in October, the book has since become a documentary capturing the burgeoning craft and DIY movement across America. Currently there are screenings across the country (and other countries), and this week the flick is debuting in the big apple. The premiere screening on Thursday is completely sold out, but there are dates following on the 14th and 15th at the Museum of Arts and Design. Check out more info here.
BUST has always been a huge supporter of the DIY movement and all crafters, but this movie brings to light so many smaller sects and groups of people that work towards supporting and nurturing the movement not only through their own work, but also by encouraging others (even customers!) to learn how to make things too. Check the trailer below.

The documentary even features an interview with our very own Debbie Stoller! After NYC the film moves onto screenings in Toronto, Barcelona, Melbourne and then back to SF and Wisconsin in April. The tour is always updated here.
I know it’s awesome to go to craft fairs (like the BUST Craftacular! ) to shop, and peruse on Etsy, but how much does ‘doing-it-yourself’ come into play in your daily life? Personally, I like making zines and doing the whole self-publishing aspect, but when it comes to things I might wear or use, I am way, way better at buying DIY!
