Being a millennial, I was raised on girl power. From Spice Girls to Destiny’s child, there was a veritable smorgasbord of groups of five or less women who’d sing, dance and preach girl power — all in some sort of pleather or cow-print ensemble.
However, as I grew out of my childhood years, girl groups started going extinct, I honoestly could not name you a single girl group between 2008 and 2012, which makes me more depressed than when SClub7 got cancelled.
Thankfully, times have changed in favor of girl power once again, so I thought I’d make you a list of 5 awesome girl-group songs that have come out recently that are about how girls rule and boys drool and let’s be honest.
1) BO$$- Fifth Harmony
My current favorite, this song mixes elements of amazing female pop acts before them — sounding like the perfect hybrid between Lil Mama’s “Lipgloss” and Pussycat Dolls “buttons.” This song is all about being a female bo$$ and not taking crap from anyone. Plus I mean, the chorus, “Boss- Michelle Obama, purse so heavy getting Oprah dollars” is probably the best thing of my life, that’s right FLOTUS you go FLOTUS.
2) Salute- Little Mix
In a similar vein, “Salute” by Little Mix is also too catchy and too good to stop listening to. It makes me want to learn how to collegiate step dance, and I love it, despite member Perrie Edwards being engaged to my One Direction boyfriend Zayn Malik. This song would be a really good song to jog too, it would make you run super fast and do Rocky punches in the air versus power-walking to the nearest Arbies.
3) Love Me – Stooshe
I love this song because they sing about men like men have been singing about women since the dawn of time. With lyrics like “you can adore me on Sunday cause Sunday is my only day off,” paired with a 60’s girl group feel and amazing vintage hair-dos, these girls are kind of the best! Not to mention their British accents are everything, so Spice Girls reminiscent, so perf.
4) Warrior- Blush
Cause nothing says “girl power” more than walking through a desert wearing high heels while in slow motion, let’s be real. Okay maybe the song is about a boy, but this song is all about being tough, being a warrior and being strong to make a relationship work, and I don’t think that’s a bad lesson for young girls to learn at all. The members of blush are from the Philippines, India, Hong Kong, Japan and South Korea and they are literally dominating the world.
5) Female President- Girls Day
Girls Day asks a serious question to young women out there “Now that we have a female president in our country, why can’t you kiss him first?” This song is completely cute, completely feminist and is telling girls that hey, we’re living in a modern era, you can tell a boy you love him first and kiss him first, we have a female president for chrisssake! (I mean, that’s more progressive than America…jus’ sayin #hilary2016). Also I had to finish this list with a K-pop band because there is no girl power without Korean girl-power.
I think this trend in girl power is also really exciting because all the girl groups feature woman of all different races including those of mixed races. I feel like the 90’s girl-band model consisted of: several blondes, a brunette and maybe one with a pixie-cut of some-sort, or pink tips at the end of her hair and that was it.
But seldom did any of the bands consist of girls of a mix of different races, so it makes me happy to see that the shitty parts of girl-groups have changed, but the good girl-power feels have stayed the same.
