‘Freedom Feminism’ Video Is As Barfy and Misguided as ‘Freedom Fries’

by Laurel Walsh

Meet Christina Hoffs Sommers, the writer who wants women to take back feminism. Wait wait – women need to take back feminism? Who else has it, if not women?  Oh right, radical leftist gender benders. Carry on.

Christina says that contemporary feminism is too centred in the political left, with “a lot of man-bashing,” and women who are “at war with their own femininity.” I personally think the left is where it’s at and that feminism rules for men, plus I know lots of hella feminine feminist femmes. But Christina laughs at that kind of “radical” feminism.

Her advice to women today:

“Reform it. Correct its excesses…Make sure that moderate, conservative, libertarian women have a voice,” she says. “And then set about helping women across the globe.”

She claims 70 percent of women don’t consider themselves feminists, and 17 percent consider the term an insult. Even if these stats are true, they prove less about a faulty movement than a social structure that’s so threatened by modern feminism that it distorts its messages and knocks it down. Kind of like what she’s doing right now.

Feminism doesn’t want you to be a man. Feminism does want ALL THE FONTS.

Christina is pushing “Freedom Feminism,” a kind of women’s movement that’s more “maternal,” and “not at war with masculinity or femininity.”

“It doesn’t want to bring down the gender system,” she says. “It recognizes that the sexes are different, but equal.” Hmmm.

My understanding of today’s feminism is that it accounts for more than two separate gender boxes, because there are more than two kinds of people. And that this inclusivity is a hard-won battle that feminists have been fighting since the last time “traditional, conservative” women dominated the movement. But my inclusive feminism still allows a place for those women, so go ahead and hear this lady out:
