I think that I would say I’m pro-comics/graphic novels. I don’t necessarily have (or really make) the time to read them…or have the money for it…but I am completely supportive of the artists and writers who have been making these fantastic combinations of writing and art for years. The struggle to be seen as legit is a battle we all have to fight at one point or another, but it’s been a long road for these ladies and gentlemen.
Which is why Bluewater Productions’ fairly newish series Female Force makes so much sense. The series began in January of 2009 and seems to have been picking up steam ever since. Bluewater opened the series, ever appropriately I suppose, with Hillary Clinton and Sarah Palin and have branched out to include boatloads of distinctive women, from Ellen and Oprah to Margaret Thatcher and Nancy Pelosi to Charlaine Harris, JK Rowling and Stephenie Meyer. In the coming months they plan to cover the lives of Meredith Vieira and Olivia Newton John. Apparently Barbara Walters even gave copies of her issue as Christmas gifts.
I gotta say, I’m a bit iffy about some of the people they’ve gone over, but that’s really just due to my own personal ideals. In their other biographical comic series, Fame and Political Power, they’ve told or will tell the stories of most of the Twilight cast (sorry, just really really not a fan…), Rush Limbaugh, George W., and Ronald Reagan. It seems that these biographical comics cover everything from juicy celebrity lives to perhaps the ideological bases of some of the most influential people in politics. In general, we as people tend to be intrigued (dazzled even) by the personal lives of others, and it’s almost never a bad idea to tell your story or someone else’s. That being said, I feel that this is a great way to show why people are the way they are. That’s what history is for.
(Also have to throw out there that the Joan Jett and the Runaways comic for their other Rock ‘N’ Roll series looks excellent!)
