Elvis Perkins in Dearland – another level of outstanding

by Kelly McClure

Our writer Aurora Montgomery went to the Elvis Perkins in Dearland show at the Bell House in Brooklyn last week and fell madly in love with the band. (One member in particular.)

Here is a review of the show that got Aurora so twitterpated:

Elvis Perkins took the stage sans In Dearland (his accompanying band) and started strumming an acoustic guitar and singing quietly into his microphone. The room was dark, the crowd was quiet and transfixed; all eyes were forward and steady on Perkins and his sweet, sad lulling. Perkins is known to perform solo, and it seemed he was starting the show alone; I assumed the rest of the band would join in a song or two. Within a few bars of the song the room started swelling with sound from behind. Warm, low horns mingled with Perkin’s voice and in the time it took to turn around, the rest of the band had parted the audience, marching their way through to the stage. The audience members huddled together as In Dearland snaked their way through, marching band style, and on to the stage to finish the song with Perkins. Perkins informed the audience that the show was being recorded, and encouraged everyone to sing along, for posterity’s sake, to prove that we were all alive and present that April 24th in Brooklyn, New York. It’s a great show to have on record. The sound at the venue was really good and they played a majority of their songs from both albums and the EP. Despite the usual sadness in Perkins’s songs, he and the band kept everything upbeat and fun. Drummer Nick Kinsey took the show to another level of outstanding during the song “All the Night Without Love,” when he came to the front of the stage wearing a marching bass drum that he played simultaneously with a maraca.  It was a perfect night to be alive and accounted for with Elvis Perkins In Dearland
