Discrimination Shouldn’t Be Legal

by Rachael Roth

Laverne Cox, who plays Sophia Burset on Orange is the New Black, encourages you to sign this petition, and ask your senator to vote to pass the Employment Non-Discrimination Act (ENDA), on Thursday.

In a letter written for the National Center for Transgender Equality, Cox, who is an out transgender woman, writes that 26% of transgender people have been fired because of their gender identity, and 78% have been disrespected or discriminated against in the work place. To top it all off, it’s still legal to discriminate against people because of their sexual orientation or gender identity at work in a whopping 33 states. Not okay.

The good news is, ENDA, which would make it illegal to discriminate against these groups in the workplace, looks as though it is likely to pass: last night the Senate voted to end the debate and no one spoke to oppose the bill. If all goes well, this would be the first time that this legislation—now including the protection of transgender people—would pass the Senate. So sign the petition and make it happen!
