The Democratic National Convention Committee just announced a lineup of 10 women who’ll be speaking at the event, which runs from September 3-6. The list includes Georgetown University student Sandra Fluke, who we all know as the woman who spoke to House Democrats in support of insurance coverage for contraceptives (we unfortunately also know her because of the Rush Limbaugh controversy) Desperate Housewives‘ Eva Longoria (who is serving as an Obama reelection campaign co-chair), and Cecile Richards, president of the Planned Parenthood Action Fund. Additional speakers will be Lilly Ledbetter (the women’s rights activist who has fought for pay equality), Nancy Keenan (president of reproductive rights org NARAL), Wisconsin Congresswoman Tammy Baldwin, Denise Juneau (the state superintendent of public instruction in Montana), Former Assistant Secretary of the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs Tammy Duckworth, and U.S. Senator Barbara Mikulski of Maryland.
As the Republican “War on Women” continues (see: that Todd Akin nonsense and countless other examples), it’s reassuring to know that the Democratic party is still standing with women. It’s vital that we have a voice (both literal and metaphorical) at the DNC, to ensure that the rights we’re still fighting for aren’t put on the backburner. What do you think about the lineup?
