Blonde Redhead Invites You To Sit Down For Dinner

by Cindy Yogmas

Blonde Redhead’s Kazu Makino, Amedeo and Simone Pace have always been masters of mesmerizing art rock. Sit Down for Dinner, which comes out nine years since their last release, shows a slower, softer, and more subdued side of the trio. On the two-part title track, Makino’s whispy vocals address forgotten family rituals and the precariousness of life over sparse piano and ambient arrangements, swiftly picking up tempo in the second half. “If” continues this dichotomy with existential reflections sung over bouncy bossa nova beats. Though they went in a more dialed-down direction on this album, it still exudes the unconventional sensibilities, melodies, and rhythms that make up their signature sound.
