Archie Comics Set to Get Live Action Treatment

by Hallie Marks

Everyone’s favorite cartoon redheaded boy is set to star in a feature film adaptation of the 72-year-old comic series Archie. The live action movie will be directed by Jason Moore (Pitch Perfect) and the screenplay will be written by Roberto Aguirre-Sacsa (Glee). There have been TV show adaptations of the comic as well as a made-for-TV movie, but Riverdale crew has never hit the big screen before.

The most famous plot points of the Archie comics involve Archie’s love-triangle with blonde beauty Betty and brunette babe Veronica. Hopefully the story line will be more complex than that and include other favorites such as Archie’s best friend Jughead or the newly introduced character, Kevin Keller—the first openly gay character in the comic.

Rumors have been swirling that the film will feature some supernatural characters—zombies to be exact. This stems from the fact that the script writer penned some recent issues of  the comic called Afterlife with Archie in which the characters are re-imagined in a zombie apocalypse stricken world. However, the rumors of this plot point being included in the movie have been quelled by Aguirre-Sacsa, who says the film “won’t be ‘Archie and the Walking Dead’.”

Additionally, we hope that the comics will give more depth to the characters of Betty and Veronica. We’d love to see them as characters deeper than two best friends fighting over a boy. It will also be interesting to see how the comics are adapted to today’s audience. Though the comics certainly have romantic/sexual undertones, will the film maintain its innocent vibe or reach out to a more mature audience? Even though the comics are still being released today, the filmmakers will also have to figure out how to adapt the characters to different times and a different audience.

Do you think the comics are timeless or do they need to be updated? Who do you see playing Archie, Betty, Veronica, and the rest of the gang?
