With over 129,000 followers, Amina Mucciolo is an Instagram style star — and it’s not hard to see why. Amina embraces bright colors and whimsical looks and counts Lisa Frank as one of her influences. Her design firm, Studio Micucci, and her “lifestyle blog for unicorns,” Tassel Fairy, are just as fun. We talked with Amina about her style for our Fashion Nation feature:

ARTIST/ENTREPRENEURLOS ANGELES, CA

Tell me about this look.
I’m wearing a tutu from Space 46 Boutique, with an emoji sweater from Wildfox, and pink high-top sneakers from ModCloth. My hair is what I like to call an “ongoing art project.” They’re yarn braids! I just decided that I would figure out a way to make my braids colorful, and I discovered this whole yarn braid thing, and it’s been my signature ever since.

Do you have a favorite piece of clothing?
I would probably go with tutus. They make me so happy to wear and I feel like I’m breaking rules when I wear them. Wearing a tutu makes me feel kind of irreverent. I’m plus-sized, so, I mean, talk about rules! There are so many rules about how women should dress in general, then the rules multiply exponentially the larger you are, and I think it’s bullshit.

When did you get into fashion?
There was a time when I didn’t have the confidence to express how I felt inside, on the outside. I’ve always loved over-the-top crazy stuff, but I was afraid to draw attention to myself. I didn’t start embracing my true self until my late 20s and early 30s. I went to treatment for an eating disorder in my late 20s, and I think that’s when I became my true self, after I began recovery.

Team Unicorn or Team Mermaid?
Growing up in the ’80s and ’90s I was into Lisa Frank and unicorns, and so I identified with that. I think other people put the label “mermaid” on me, but when it started to happen, I was like, Yeah! I love the beach; I love the water. But if I have to choose, it’s gotta be unicorn all the way. I relate to unicorns on a deeper level.

Describe your personal style.
“Unicorn Boho,” because I’m from California, born and raised, and I like things that are comfortable and easy. And the unicorn thing is self-explanatory! If I can look like something sweet and edible, like a candy or a cupcake, then it’s like, mission accomplished.
