I might have mentioned that I am an artist. That means I’m always on the look out for inspiration. I’ve definitely found that in artist Agustina Woodgate. I was particularly interested to see her incorporate two different styles into one: graffiti and poetry. Being a Brooklyn girl, graffiti and all other types of street art is something that I really love and connect with and being somewhat introverted as well, poetry is something I’ve recently turned to as a means to express myself. But, the two of them together? I may be late on the come up but I don’t think I’ve heard of the odd but, indubitably cool combo before.
The art which she calls “Poetry Bombing” is reminiscent of Poetry in your Pocket Day from my elementary and middle school days (anyone else remember that day?). Except it’s not just in a pocket it could maybe be near the inside waste of your coat, or on the tag of that thrifty cardigan you eyed the moment you walked through the door. And that just makes it all the more magical to me. Imagine picking up a really cool shirt one day and discovering a little poem sewn inside? Agustina goes into thrift stores and secretly sews words from famed poets like Sylvia Path into items of clothing for people to find. She describes it as “giving the garments a voice”; leaving something for people to discover.
