For many of you, summer means lazy days at the park, beach, or rooftop. (Or, as Dr. Spaceman once prescribed for Liz, “a little R&R. Rum and Ritalin.”) For me, it means another three months of summer reruns. It also means that the major TV networks are finalizing and announcing fall lineups and dragging me down a hole of anxiety, relief, and disappointment. (It’s possible I’m far too emotionally invested in TV.)
We told you yesterday about Mindy Kaling’s new sitcom on FOX, but here are the announcements (that I care about) that have been made so far:
- 30 Rock (NBC) has been renewed for a seventh, and final, season, but it will be only 13 episodes long.
- Community (NBC) has also been renewed for 13 episodes for its fourth season. This could be the last season of the show, but realistically, it depends on how the show and any new NBC shows are performing next fall. While I’m not clamoring for #sixseasonsandmovie like most avid fans, I’m still relieved we get a little more time at Greendale.
- New Girl (FOX) easily grabbed a second season. Once this show ditched that infuriating “Adorkable” theme and started writing Jess as less of a cartoon, I was finally able to appreciate the non-stop joke machine that is Schmidt.
- Modern Family (ABC) obviously got renewed. This is barely news.
- The Good Wife (CBS) got a fourth season (another no-brainer).
- Suburgatory (ABC) will be returning for a second season. This show is pretty good, but has an outstanding cast including Jeremy Sisto, Cheryl Hines, Alan Tudyk, Chris Parnell, Ana Gasteyer, and Maestro Harrell.
Now for the anxiety. The following shows haven’t been renewed or canceled (at least at the time I’m writing this):
- Up All Night (NBC)
- Happy Endings (ABC)
- Parks and Recreation (NBC). I was under the impression that Parks has even more viewers than Community, and after last night’s stellar, mind-blowing season (please oh please not series) finale, how could it get canceled? Unfortunately, it seems that cancellation is a real threat. If you are concerned, there’s already a petition started to try to keep it on the air. And you can always take to Twitter and Facebook to express your interest in keeping the show on the air. #Savepawnee!
UPDATE: All that anxiety was for nothing! Parks and Recreation got an order for a full 22-episode season five, and Up All Night and Happy Endings also got another season!
(I still want NBC to just hire Perd Hapley as a regular newscaster.)
