Sick Sad World

phpriIgn6AM.jpgThis Tuesday, a man named George Sodini walked into a classroom at an LA Fitness outside of Pittsburgh, killed 3 women, injured 9 people, and finally, took his own life. The event was nothing less than atrocious, especially when reports came out that Sodini had no connection to any of the women he encountered that night. Then Sodini was revealed by his online 'diary' to be a bitter, woman-hating, self-victimizing (pardon my french) total asshole. Want proof? Here's a sampling:

June 5, 2009: I was reading several posts on different forums and it seems many teenage girls have sex frequently. One 16 year old does it usually three times a day with her boyfriend. So, err, after a month of that, this little --- has had more sex than ME in my LIFE, and I am 48. One more reason. Thanks for nada, b----! Bye.

You get the idea.

As a native Pittsburgher, a woman, and a civilized human being, this guy has me totally enraged. Then, my mom, a woman of strong feminist conviction, pointed me to this local report on last night's candlelight vigil , wherein reporter John Greiner wraps the segment by suggesting that

. . . the lesson we can learn from this is that, as friends and families, we should perhaps reach out to those who are isolated, or lonely, or troubled, because it may help.

Okay, hang on. This sounds like a great idea, and yes, I think the world would be a better place if we all reached out to one another. But in this scenario? Let me just quote my mother's email:

Whew, what a bunch of bunk . . . When a man has psychiatric issues and has no boundaries, the best a woman can do is report him and run, not reach out. That's just typical sexist ideology that women should 'fix' a man or rescue him. [Abusive males need] to be left as quickly as possible, not shown kindness as they lap it up and take more advantage . . . You need to make sure you're taking care of yourself, you young women and girls. You need to stand strong.

Mother knows best.
