The Birth Control Paradox

Is your birth control making you smell "less attractive" to prospective males? That's the question scientists at Duke University are researching in a fairly new study conducted with lemurs as test subjects. In the study, female lemurs were injected with the popular birth control, Depo-Provera, also known as the shot. The female lemurs then allegedly sent out a "different scent molecule" than the control group. Males seemed to shun the injected females, leaving scientists wondering if birth control actually effects the chemical make up of pheromones. Read More

Sex in the Stone Age

Archaeologists made an interesting find last week. While excavating a site in Sweden, they found what appears to be a penis carved out of antler bone. Researchers are still speculating on the actual function of this phallic object, and possible uses include tool or weapon. However, other objects of phallic nature have been found before and this new find may mean evidence of ancient sex toys used by our ancestors. Read More
Big news from the Center for AIDS Programme of Research in South Africa is being celebrated globally today. CAPRISA announced a breakthrough in research on male to female transmission of HIV with the use of vaginally applied tenofovir gel. With over 5 million people currently undergoing therapy for HIV/AIDS, and no cure in sight, prevention tactics are critical.  The results of the study were basically that using the gel cut a woman’s chances of getting HIV from her partner in half. She’s been using her talent lately as an inspiration for change in the rigid social structures of traditional Afghan culture through her new television talk show called Mozhdah. Born in Kabul, Mozhdah’s family fled to Canada when she was very young. She was raised in Canada, but when she returned to Afghanistan she realized her calling was to be part of what she calls “a much needed change” to the country. We wait so long for summer.. hot days, warm nights and vacation time. But there is one thing that comes along with that hot weather that sucks, the summertime roach invasion. A study conducted in Germany claims that the scent of the Jasmine plant  promotes relaxation and reduces anxiety.
