More! Gift Guide!

BY Lisa in General

Picking things for the holiday gift guide is one of my favorite duties when it comes to working on the Dec/Jan issue. It's so fun to window shop on the Internet and see all the awesome goodies that everyone puts together. Inevitably, I find way more cool stuff than fits on one page, so here are a few extras in case you need some additional gift-giving inspiration (for friends, family, or, of course, yourself!). First up, this Letter Bag from Moop in gunmetal gray. Read More
We've been fans of Rachel Trachtenburg since she was but a wee lass, bangin' the drums for her family's band, the Trachtenburg Family Slideshow Players. So it's a little hard to believe that she's turning 16. What's not hard to believe though, is how many awesome people will be helping her celebrate on December 13th at the House of Yes in Brooklyn! With performances by Murray Hill, Care Bears on Fire, and Rachel's new band SUPERCUTE, this is a sweet 16 party you will not want to miss.  Rachel's Sweet 16 Show, $10 Sunday, Dec. 13th, 7pm - 1am House of Yes, 342 Maujer St. Read More

She's got the look

BY Lisa in Style

I really love Tamera Ferro's style. If she seems familiar to you, that's cause we feature this fashionable San Franciscan in the Looks section of our current issue (click through for a peek), and her "Audrey Hepburn-meets-black forest-meets-gypsies" vibe is the dope show. My favorite part of her amazing outfit is definitely the handmade topper so you can imagine my gasp of excitement when I realized that she made it herself and actually SELLS them in her Etsy shop! I'm not one to intentionally bite someone's style, but in this case, I might make an exception. Read More

Holiday Tunage

BY Lisa in Music

Bear with me while I dork out for a second. I love Christmas music. I do, I can’t help it. I think it started with my cherished New Kids on the Block, Merry Merry Christmas cassette (featuring Donnie Wahlberg’s seminal tune Funky, Funky Xmas), and these days come December 1st I’ve got A John Waters Christmas on repeat. So you can bet I was down to see The Brian Setzer Orchestra’s Christmas Rocks! Extravaganza at the Hammerstein Ballroom on Monday night. Read More

For those of you old enough to remember Sassy (RIP), there's a new kid in town that's helping to fill those smart-content-for-young-independent-gals shoes: I Heart Daily is a free email newsletter that hits your inbox with "the band you should hear, the girl who’s kicking ass in the world, the lipstick color that looks good on everyone, the designer who doesn’t have a fashion show yet but is completely get the idea." Frozen Lemon Cup Recipe

BY Lisa in Eat Me

When I was 12 my family took a trip around Italy. Aside from the beautiful sights, it was the Italian cuisine that had the most impact on me. While in Florence, we dined at a quaint, family-owned restaurant called the Scoiattolo. My brother and I had a tasty, fun dessert there that inspired this recipe for frozen lemon cups. These adorable treats can be an easy, inexpensive addition to a dinner party, or a sweet ending to a romantic meal that just might seal the deal! Frozen Lemon Cup Start by cutting off the top of a lemon, about ¾ from the bottom of the fruit. Read More

Need some last-minute Halloweenie inspiration? Tara, at Nothing Elegant, has as awesome roundup of some fabulous ladies from history, along with a costume breakdown featuring things you probably already have in your closet and the few things you'll need to get. First up, Marie Curie. Pop on over for the rest. Who: Marie Curie, First Lady of science, physicist, chemist, and creator of the theory of radioactivity. Why: Because you can carry your favorite beverage around in a beaker and tell everyone it's a dangerous radioactive element. You already have: A loose black dress. Read More
We've been digging the new album Arrow from Clare and the Reasons here in the office so when I found out they were playing at the Music Hall of Williamsburg last night, I dragged my dreamy-chamber-pop-loving ass out in the rain to see them. Let me tell you, it was worth the wet socks.    Clare's delicate voice is crazy gorgeous and hearing it live just drives that point home. Read More

Lucha VaVoom

BY Lisa in General

Hey New Yorkers...looking for something to fill the Sunday night void left by the finale of True Blood? Look no further. This weekend Lucha VaVoom is debuting its crazy mix of Mexican wrestling and burlesque at Webster Hall . As if the high-flying luchadores weren't spectacle enough, in between matches the legendary Wau Wau Sisters will hit the trapeze, Karis will hula-hoop her ass off (or maybe just her clothes), and L.A. burlesquers Ursulina and Lux La Croix will shake their moneymakers.
