Last night I got to go to a concert at Irving Plaza to see some of my favorite people perform some of my favorite songs. It was called the Starkid SPACE Tour, and yes it sounds stupid, but they are really the funniest, most talented group of people ever. I waited in line with my friends (fellow 8th graders) for 5 hours, and when we finally got in it was extremely cramped but it was still exciting just to be there.  The crowd was made up of 99% girls, probably 13-25 years old.  The guitar player for the band on the tour, Charlene Kaye, opened up the show with her ownsongs. I never get tired of John Roberts! His fans know him from his Mom character on Youtube (the "star" of 2006's amazing "Look at the tree!" video), as well as the obnoxious teen Debra (from the "Jackie and Debra" video), and the voice of delightfully abrasive Linda Belcher on Bob's Burgers. This guy is so good, if he was on Saturday Night Live, I'd go back to watching it. Here's his latest creation, "Bald with a Blue Tooth." Prepare to be seduced. Read More

Book Tour: West Coast Diary

BY Laurie in DIY

Both Debbie and I had a great time on our mini - west coast book tour for The BUST D.I.Y. Guide to Life, it’s always a pleasure to meet BUST readers on the road! Here are a few highlights from the trip. 1st stop Seattle Debbie took the train from NY, and I flew in to Seattle and got to see some old friends, including Dave, Annabel, Heather, Emily, Mark, Steve, Kelly and (fab advertiser) Sandy Glaze of Sin In Linen. I'm loving the new single entitled Madeline by Lissy Trullie. While I'll admit I was skeptical of her first release back in 2009 (another former model makes the scene?) She has completely won me over, especially here with her deep, Nico-ish inflections and the "Sunday Morning" guitar and sombre tambourine taps. Looking forward to hearing her new album, produced by John Hill (Santigold, M.I.A., Shakira) and David Sitek (TV On the Radio, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Liars) out next March on Downtown Records. Read More

Happy Friday Ya'll! Twelve baby pandas were born in China recently at the Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding in Sichuan province. The wild panda population has become an endangered species mostly because of habitat shrinkage, poaching, and the fact that they are picky about their mates (not so good at getting knocked up!). I have no idea where these pandas will go once they are grown up but I do know they are about the cutest damn thing ever. Read More

Laura Marling Album Review

BY Laurie in Music

A Creature I Don’t Know (Ribbon Music) Beloved English folk singer-songwriter Laura Marling has a story to tell on her third album, A Creature I Don’t Know. Marling proves once again that she is a complex creature that’s worldly and wise, well beyond her 21-years. Always the humble musician, she creates a poetic masterpiece filled with a newfound independence and womanly confidence.  On the album’s debut single “Sophia,” Marling, like Aeneas invoking the Sybil, softly leads us into a dashed incantation. If there is one motto that I’ve always believed in, it is this: You can learn a lot from the elderly set. My own grandmother was a huge inspiration to me, she had a career and a family, superb manners, lived to be 96, and always managed to look impeccable. So when I first saw the blog Advanced Style I was instantly smitten. The creator and founder, the wonderful Ari Seth Cohen, has a deep, real passion for women of a certain age who do their own thing and who love to dress stylishly, and he has been photographing and interviewing these amazing folks since 2008.
