I love this organization, Boarding for Breast Cancer. They set up little workshops at various snowboarding and surfing events and even at the Vans Warped tour to teach women how to check their breasteses. I know times are tough, but if you happen to have some extra cash, they are having a fund raising event on Oct. 23rd in NYC with cocktails, hors d’oeuvers, art and silent auction to support the foundation. Guest of Cindy Sherman

BY Laurie in Arts

Guest of Cindy Sherman is a compelling documentary about a guy who falls in love with the most influential female art star of our time, Cindy Sherman, and gets lost in the relationship. It's about art fame and the seeming inadequacy of being the 'plus 1.'  Paul H-O has made both a touching boyfriend movie, and a scathing portrayal of the art world, with great footage from the 90's art scene.        I think like alot of people, myself included, H-O has a love/hate relationship with the art world. He exposes alot of the bullshit and it's fun to watch. Read More

The Great Schlep from The Great Schlep on Vimeo. I love that our cover girl Sarah Silverman is involved in this campaign by JewsVote.org that is organizing a weekend where folks can go down to Florida and convince their grandparents (Zadie and Buppy) to vote Obama. She made this video for theGreatShlep.com and it's hilarious and hopefully effective! She's the pied piper of hipster Jews! Even if you're not Jewish, this seems like a good tactic to try on your grandparents, plus, I'm sure they'd love to see you. Read More

Vivian Girls

BY Laurie in General

Vivian Girls Self-titled (In The Red) Destined to become a cult favorite, the Brooklyn-based all-gal rock trio Vivian Girls (with their name culled from the beloved Henry Darger) may remain just that. With jangly guitars and driving beats that sound like they were recorded in someone's basement (on a four-track, in 1972), it's hard to imagine this self-titled debut enticing the mainstream, though the DIY recording quality was surely a conscious decision. The album simply serves as enticement to see the Girls live, since raw energy like this can't properly translate to tape anyway. Read More

Messin' w McCain

BY Laurie in Arts

Photographer Jill Greenberg has gotten herself into a real shit storm since she posted some doctored images of McCain on her website a few weeks ago. She was hired by The Atlantic Monthly to shoot him, and not long afterward got creative with the photoshop, including a version with bloody fangs and even one with a monkey pooping on Mccains head(!) It all seems a little extreme to me, not to mention damaging to her career. (Apparently her agent dropped her like a hot potato). And even tho I think McCain is a douchebag, it seems like a dumb move. Read More
