Screaming Females, one of our favorite bands on Don Giovanni Records, released a compilation of their singles a few days ago called ... Singles. We ended up being pretty jazzed about it, so  we had our writer Erica Varlese whip up a review. Here it is:  As the Jersey saying goes, “We pump our fists, not our gas.” And Screaming Females is fist-pumpin’ music. Read More
I always try to run to the blog bubble here as fast as possible when I discover something cool, in hopes of beating the other ladies to the punch. And it looks like I won! I was just sitting on my bed eating a piece of chicken while wrapped in a blanket, and I came across this new St. Vincent video. This particular video is for the song "Laughing With a Mouth of Blood," and was made by the best comedy duo to ever walk the face of the planet ... Carrie Babestein (I mean, Brownstein,) and Fred Armisen of ThunderAnt. Please enjoy, and don't choke on your chicken. St. Read More
Surfer Blood's debut album, Astro Coast, was released by Kanine on the 19th, but all the kids have been worked up about them for months. We ran out of room to include a review in our FEB/MAR issue, so HERE IT IS, written with love by our Portland based writer, Elisabeth Wilson.  There are at least two kinds of people who should love Surfer Blood’s debut Astro Coast: people who love '60s hand clappy surf-pop and people who love that '90s indie rock you wanna sing along to while driving at night. Melissa Auf der Maur has spent the last five years working on her second solo album, Out of Our Minds, and she will totally punch your lights out if you let it leak before the March 23rd release date. She told me as much, and much more, during an early afternoon phone call where we touched on such topics as aliens, David Lynch, and the "C word."And by "C word," I mean Courtney. Melissa is probably most known for having spent five years playing bass for Hole, as well as her stint with the Smashing Pumpkins. But guess what? Her solo stuff is better. True story. Read More
Okkervil River took a break from their year long lull in touring to perform with Levon Helm at the NYC venue Terminal 5 last week. Seeing Okkervil as an opening band can be disappointing because their sets are over in what feels like seconds, and even when the band is headlining a performance there is never enough time once you’re immersed in their songs and the stories within them. The band took the stage at 8pm on the dot and played a solid forty-five minute set, that although short, was far from disappointing. Read More
I would say that I listen to about 30+ different bands on any given week, and to be quite frank, most of them sort of bleed right into the next. I like to sit at my desk and listen to each new CD that comes into the BUST office with care, in its entirety, and then at the end I will make my evaluation by taping a little note to the cover that says something like, "this sounds like farts," or, "this is decent, but in an annoying way." When pressed to define what sort of music I prefer, I'm never really sure how to answer. Read More
Have you ever had a dream where Kathleen Hanna asks you to house-sit for her, and the minute you know the coast is clear, you seek out her private diaries and personal letters, make a heap of it all on the floor and jump into it, as you would a pile of leaves? No? Um, me neither. But if you ever wanted to do something similar, you should head to the NYU library and check out the donation of old zines, and other such writings that she's added to their Riot Grrrl Collection. While doing my daily trolling of the Internet, I came across the coolest thing ever. Artist Katie Paterson took a trip to Iceland and recorded the sounds of glaciers, which she then had pressed into ice records that were made from the drippings of the actual glaciers she recorded. (!!!) It's little nuggets of brilliance like this that make me happy to be alive, and whistle while I work and all that. To join in on the inspiration, go here. Read More
Dragging someone who is vocal about hating comedy to a comedy show, in three degree weather, is potentially more of a laugh riot than said show could ever hope to be; however, when my friend and I braved the icy NYC winds to see Sandra Bernhard perform a sold out show at Joe's Pub last night, she for sure managed to pull off entertaining us even better than we entertain ourselves. I have been going sort of nuts over Hidden, the new These New Puritans album, which is set to be released by Domino on March 2nd. I wasn't familiar with the band until recently, but now I'm hooked and will be forced to sniff out their first release, Beat Pyramid, as well.  The first single off of Hidden is called "We Want War," and happens to be my favorite song off of the album. I usually hate when that happens, but luckily the rest of the CD is just as good. Check out the video for "We Want War," directed by Daniel Askill. It's pretty much amazing. Read More
