Warning: this post has nothing to do with women.  However, if you are a woman who likes free donuts this post has everything to do with you. Today, as I'm sure you already know, is International Talk Like a Pirate Day. Krispy Kreme is celebrating by offering a free glazed donut to anyone who shows up at Krispy Kreme and talks like a pirate, and a dozen free donuts to anyone who shows up dressed as a pirate.   That’s all. As you were.   Photos via krispykreme.com and vintageseance.blogspot. Read More
There are a whole lot of reasons to love BUST darling and comedian extraordinaire Mike Birbiglia. But chalk up one more for his new movie Sleepwalk With Me. Based on his one-man show of the same name, and produced by This American Life heartthrob Ira Glass, we at BUST HQ have been excited about this movie for a while. (Don’t believe us? Check out our interview with Birbiglia in our August/September issue and our blog posts on him and his movie.) This movie has been out for a few weeks, but if you don’t live in a major city you might not have seen it around. Read More
What could be more fun than Oxygen’s reality hit Bad Girls Club? Well...a lot of things. (Remind me again why that show's on TV?) As it turns out, though, a house populated by our favorite badass lady characters from books, TV, and movies is pretty cool. I present to you Comediva’s BAMF Girls Club, which features characters such as Lisbeth Salander, Hermione Granger, and Buffy interacting under the same roof. This comedic web series debuted on August 28th, and it’s all kinds of hilarious. Read More
On Monday, NBC announced that three new comics will star in its upcoming 2012-2013 season of Saturday Night Live. All of them are Chicago based, and two of them are ladies. Though we're still bummed over the show's loss of Kristen Wiig, we're ready to open our hearts to these new comedic players. New stars Aidy Bryant, Tim Robinson, and Cecily Strong are all affiliated with Second City, the famous troupe that has launched the careers of comedy greats and SNL alums Tina Fey, Amy Poehler, Amy Sedaris, and Gilda Radner (among many, many more).                                             Bebe Wood, the star of NBC’s The New Normal, is only nine, but she has somehow channeled the spirit of Grey Gardens' Little Edie Beale. I don’t know if she’s got an Ouija Board hidden behind her back or what, but this girl is great. Go here to see her pitch-perfect impression.  Her overall look, her expressions, and her voice inflections are dead-on. What’s even crazier is that the impression is all her own. Read More
HBO has released the second teaser trailer for its upcoming biopic, The Girl, which focuses on the relationship between actress Tippi Hedren and director Alfred Hitchcock during the filming of his thriller classic, The Birds. Directed by Julian Jarrold (Becoming Jane) the film stars Sienna Miller (Stardust) as Tippi Hedren and Toby Jones (The Hunger Games) as Alfred Hitchcock. This biopic is going to be an all-out drama fest, not only because of its talented cast and crew, but because of Hitchcock and Hedren’s tumultuous working and personal relationship. Read More
Many of you know that Chik-fil-A makes a lot of sandwiches and donates a lot of money to anti-gay organizations. However you might not be familiar with the badass LGBT activist who shed light on this company and their hateful activities in January of this year, long before the recent hubbub. Ladies and gentleman, may I present to you Hillary Dworkoski, dedicated gay-rights activist and college sophomore. Dworkoski is responsible for the change.org petition that raised awareness about CEO Dan Cathy and his backward opinions on love and basic human rights. Read More
I know, I know. You’ve already watched and read a million incarnations of Sherlock Holmes. But I’m encouraging you to make room for just one more. I was lucky enough to see the pilot of CBS’s new show, Elementary, and I’m very happy to report it’s worth watching. Elementary is a modern-day adaption of the tale of Sherlock Holmes, starring Johnny Lee Miller (Trainspotting) and Lucy Liu (Charlie’s Angels, Kill Bill Volumes 1&2, every action movie ever). To Kill a Meme

Some of you Internet users may be familiar with the ‘Idiot Nerd Girl’ meme. For those who are not, it's a meme depicting a young girl with thick plastic-framed glasses, on top of images emblazoned with a joke about what a poseur she is and how she doesn’t understand nerd culture. Examples include‘42 lolololol. Douglas Adams? Who is that? and ‘Monty Python is the funniest guy ever.' These jokes are weak because they perpetuate the already annoying stereotype that women can’t hack it in nerd subcultures. Read More
