I'm a pretty big list maker. Post-its have become a part of my room decor and scribbled on notes are forever falling out of my backpack pockets. I'm also always on the lookout for some new inspiration, so an inspiring inventory is pretty much the cream of the crop in my book. These four are particularly special--each collection of words provides inspirational thoughts and ideas that are applicable to living a creative, inquisitive, and fulfilling life in general. You don't have to be an artist, musician, or writer to appreciate these mini-manifestos. Read More
There are a lot of Tumblrs out there in this big, bad world—some good, some not so good. Amongst a sea of awkward found photos and hung over owl pics, there’s occasionally a special gem that makes you feel a little bit better about clicking through Tumblrs all day instead of tackling that ever-daunting to-do list. Don’t get me wrong, I love me some funny cat pictures as much as the next person, but sometimes it’s satisfying to find a blog that contains content that is both funny and inspiring (and no, I don’t mean things like this, either). Past BUST “Man We Love” and New Orleans DJ Rusty Lazer is in town with rapper Nicky Da B and we’re ready to get groovin'. Primarily known as the live DJ and creative partner of Sissy Bounce rapper Big Freedia, Lazer also has some sweet solo spins that are worth getting familiar with. Combining an eclectic range of genres and cultures from the streets of his hometown, Lazer’s sets promise everything from '50s twists to '70s soul and R&B. Read More
Dan Deacon’s new video for “True Thrush” off the new album America, out August 28th, is based on the game "telephone." Co-directed with Ben O'Brien, the video opens with a short scene created and filmed by the duo, which is then imitated by another team of two, and so on. Each pair was given one hour and one take to recreate the previous groups’ video from memory—costumes, set, acting and all. The game ends messier and more insane than it begins, resulting in some crazy art, new gestures and actions, and a giant, cardboard grouch-monster. Read More
Last Thursday the 12th, at the strike of 6:00, I scooted out of the BUST office and excitedly headed straight to Pier 84 for the first free show of the Hudson River Rocks summer concert series, featuring Dan Deacon and John Maus. The show opened with Baltimore grunge-rock group, Roomrunner, who had a few technical issues and consequential commentary (“all of our shit is broken”), which ended up interrupting the potential loud/fast/hard energy the band could have fused into the crowd. Brooklyn-based designer and artist Mike Perry, (and BUST contributor!), creates work that’s wonderful, weird, and entirely his own. His distinct illustrations and designs are teeming with personality--full of patterns, shapes, and charming characters. Recently, I had the opportunity to check out Perry’s studio. I sat down to chat with him about everything from personal process to figuring out the universe (sort of). Read More
If you’re into fashion blogs, you may be familiar with Rhiannon Leifheit of the wonderful, vintage-inspired "Liebemarlene." Blogging for years, she’s been featured on multiple websites and graced the pages of many magazines, including our very own back in 2008. Liebemarlene is one of the first fashion blogs I've read, and I’ve been a follower ever since. While she does post wonderful collections, outfits, and photo shoots, Leifheit also writes about a variety of other things aside from fashion. Read More
Regardless of your opinions on her or her music, rapper Nicki Minaj makes some straightforward and seriously valid points about sexism in this short clip. The video's an oldie but a goodie--it's from her 2010 MTV documentary, My Time Now, but has been making the rounds lately. If you haven't checked it out, it's well worth a watch.
She tackles double standards in the workplace, explaining, “When I am assertive, I’m a bitch. When a man is assertive, he’s a boss. He's bossed up. No negative connotation behind 'bossed up.' But lots of negative connotation behind being a bitch. Read More
What happens when you team up punk-rock legend Iggy Pop and surf-pop darling Bethany Cosentino? You get a rockin’ track that’s a little gritty, a little sweet, and utterly infectious. The forefather of punk rock and the Best Coast front woman were approached to collaborate on a song that premiered on air this past Sunday in the new episode of HBO's True Blood, and really dug the idea. Music fans may've heard the song online a week earlier, out of context of the episode, which contains the same name. Read More
I’ve heard of learning from the masters--you know, studying the big names, imitating their works, and pulling inspiration from them. But artist Dorothee Golz is doing something quite different than all of that. Instead of being influenced by the work, she actually makes modern people become a part of it.
In these fascinating (and mildly creepy) portraits, Golz transplants well-known, classic portrait heads onto the bodies of modern women. Not only does she create bodies for these famous-floating heads, but she also adds an entire environment around them. Read More
