House Votes to End Planned Parenthood Funding Despite Speier's Courage

Last night during a House debate, California Representative Jackie Speier, talked about her own abortion after what she considered to be an offensive presentation from New Jersey Representative Chris Smith.

The debate was over legislation to end federal funding for Planned Parenthood, headed by Indiana Representative Mike Pence.  Although Democrat Rep. Jackie Speier intended to speak about a different issue, GOP Rep. Chris Smith’s graphic description of an abortion procedure turned her “stomach in knots.”

“I lost a baby. But for you to stand on this floor, and to suggest, as you have, that somehow this is a procedure that is either welcomed or done cavalierly or done without any thought is preposterous.” She revealed that her pregnancy was ended because of complications. Rep. Speier wants to direct the conversation away from the feud against Planned Parenthood and instead focus on creating more jobs for Americans.

Despite the courage of Speier, the House passed the amendment that will eliminate the federal funding for abortion by a 240-185 vote. This measure will eliminate approximately $330 million for preventative-health services.
