With more than 30 acts lined up for this year’s Tinderbox Music Festival, it was possible to rotate between the three stages of Webster Hall from noon to well past midnight and never go a minute without a new act taking the stage. Since I don’t have superhuman stamina, I made my way to the Main Stage at 7 pm to see Computer Magic, a.k.a. Danielle “Danz” Johnson, bleep-bloop through her electronic set. Danz performed for an intimate audience, who sat pow-wow style on the floor. Read More
Alongside the topless portraits of young women under 40 years old who have survived breast cancer, the words “breast cancer is not a pink ribbon” speaks volumes. Fashion photographer David Jay shot the series of large-scale portraits, titled The Scar Project, to give an often-unseen look at the women who have battled early onset breast cancer, and who bear the scars to prove it.   The project gives a face to the thousands of women under 40 who are diagnosed with breast cancer every year, as well as a glimpse inside the reality of the disease. Big news in the comedy world: Kristin Wiig and Bill Hader, two of my favorite funny people from SNL are reuniting, this time on the big screen. Wiig and Hader will team up to star in the dark comedy The Skeleton Twins, set for release in 2013.  The story follows the estranged twins after each manages to narrowly defy death on the same day, adding a supernatural twist to the comedy. As a result, they come together to figure out what has gone wrong with their lives, starting with their relationships. Read More
Maria Bamford, who you may know as the "the crazy Christmas lady" in Target's Black Friday ad campaign the past three years, is a funny woman. Funny enough that she recently played a recurring character on the fX series Louie and will soon recur in the upcoming reboot of Arrested Development on Netflix.  Good timing, since Bamford will be releasing her first direct-to-fans special Maria Bamford: The Special Special Special! on November 28, 2012.  This one-hour "anti-special" features the comedian performing stand-up in her living room for her parents, Joel and Marilyn. The temperatures have dropped to damn-near freezing and it is getting dark out at an ungodly hour, but that doesn’t mean Northeasterners have to kiss music festivals goodbye. Cue the Tinderbox Music Festival: in its third year running, this 100 percent lady-fronted, New York-based fest stands and delivers right at the start of the chilly months, before winter sets in for good. Boy Meets World fans out there may be in for a big surprise; rumors have been circulating about a possible sequel series to the beloved show, tentatively called Girl Meets World, which will be centered around Cory and Topanga’s preteen daughter. The Hollywood Reporter confirmed that the Disney Channel has been in talks with the former series' executive producer Michael Jacob on a possible series sequel, but there is no word out yet on whether original castmates Ben Savage (Cory) and Danielle Fishel (Topanga) will revisit their roles as adults-or if William Daniels (aka Mr. Read More
What with the street style bloggers crawling over every corner of the Internet, it seems as though the next-level creeping was bound to happen eventually. This latest incarnation of style stalking is through a camera linked to the Internet, uploading shots of passerby in real time from, naturally, Brooklyn, New York. The camera snapping shots of passers-by is located along Williamsburg’s Bedford Avenue, and is motion activated, so anyone and everyone walking by is showcased on the blog, called Styleblaster, to be judged by all. Here’s a heartwarming story to kick off the last full week of Breast Cancer Awareness Month; New York-based photographer Bob Carey has been photographing himself wearing a pink tutu for breast cancer awareness, calling it The Tutu Project. Carey first donned the tulle in support of his wife, Linda, who was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2003. Aww. And the man sure knows how to rock a flouncy pink skirt:         Carey has recently released Ballerina, a book of these images, which will benefit breast cancer organizations such as Cancercare.
