Looks like the Senate bathrooms might need a makeover. Newly reelected Minnesota Democrat Amy Klobuchar recently spoke about one consequence of having a record number of women senators: a line in the bathroom. “For the first time, we had a traffic jam in the women’s senator’s bathroom,” she said. “There were five women in there. There’s only two stalls! And I’m not going to say who — that would be really bad for decorum. There were five of us in there, two newly elected. So, very exciting. Read More

What happens when a Riot Grrrl grows up? Olympia, Washington-based artist Nikki McClure spent the early ‘90s making album covers for Sleater-Kinney and touring with Lois Maffeo and Kicking Giant. In 1996, she began to paper-cut: armed with an X-ACTO blade and black paper, McClure creates beautiful, sculptural “carved paintings” of everyday life. Her paper-cuts have been featured on record covers, calendars, greeting cards, non-profit logos, Microsoft advertisements and even storm drains. Read More
The battle for women’s suffrage took place on the streets, in picket lines, in jail cells, chained to the railings of government buildings, and…in the mail? Social science blog The Society Pages has compiled archives of suffragist and anti-suffrage postcards from the early 1900s (at least these ones don’t suggest that women wear a muzzle!). Here are a few of our favorites below: Suffragist   Anti-suffrage Images from thesocietypages.org. Read More

Yesterday, the New York Times published an article on plus-size fashion bloggers, and it’s full of amazing quotes from some amazing people. I’d already been following a few of these ladies, but now I have a whole new bunch of blogs bookmarked. Here are the bloggers, with what they told the New York Times:     Gabi Gregg of Gabifresh: “Once I sized out of mainstream stores, I loved shopping more. It was a challenge. Just because I was a certain size didn’t mean I was going to wear frumpy clothing. I want to show them there are other options. Read More
