You’re probably familiar with Kickstarter, a website that helps people with plans get the funding they need to make their dreams come true. Kickstarter is a testament to the Internet’s capacity for good—complete strangers can donate money to the projects they believe in, and many of the artists, filmmakers, musicians, startup charities, roller derby teams, and various other visionaries can contribute to culture. It’s kind of like Ebay meets Pay It Forward, minus the part where the precocious kid from The Sixth Sense gets stabbed (spoiler alert) and with a lot more urban farming. Read More
Review by Anna Bean The Diablo Cody-Jason Reitman dream team is back with another take on adolescence, but where Juno had its leading lady in a position to grow up too fast, the 37-year-old principal of Young Adult hasn’t yet embraced her adulthood. Mavis, played pitch-perfectly by Charlize Theron, is a Kardashians-watching, Diet-Coke-guzzling ghostwriter who pens Waverly Prep, a fictional young adult book series. Read More
Here at BUST HQ, we have coffee on the brain. We’re in a perpetual state of drinking it, discussing it, and trying to coerce the lovely interns into heading outside and buying it. Caffeine addicts like us can’t imagine a better holiday gift than a subscription to Craft Coffee’s monthly service. Every month, your giftee gets a box of three different coffees, each from an artisan roaster in the U.S. For between $20 and $25 a month (depending on the length of your subscrip), it’s way cheaper than a daily Starbucks/Stumptown habit, and way more fun. Our first week of tour with CSS has been sooo fun! We are chasing their bus all over the west coast in our charcoal colored Dodge Caravan. This tour we have a drummer with us which is super duper exciting. Lee Free is our drummer, and he is playing a lot of the percussion samples from our record on live drums. We are super happy with the new texture it brings to the show. Blowtorch is at the sound helm again and we are just thrilled to have the family back together. (JD met a few cool vaginas in Portland OR @ The Wonder Ballroom!") Two people came up on stage so far. Read More
Slut Walk NYC is a grassroots mission doing its part to end sexual and domestic violence to women all around the globe. The movement grew from a comment by a police officer who told women the best way to protect themselves against sexual violence would be to stop dressing like sluts. Understandably outraged, over 3000 women exercised their rights to free assembly and speech and marched to show support for the end of discrimination. Marches are now world wide with successful runs in London, New Delhi, Toronto, Nashville and other locations. Read More
I just love Gloria Steinem!  I was given more reasons to love her last night, after watching the new HBO documentary Gloria: In Her Own Words.  Gloria is the prime example of “the personal is political.”  Throughout the film she offers very personal anecdotes from her life.  Through her intimate accounts with the viewer, it’s almost like having a conversation, as well as a history lesson, with her in your living room. At one point she describes realizing that personal struggles should not have to be a secret. Read More
While watching Hallmark's I Love Lucy marathon in honor of Lucille Ball's 100th birthday yesterday, I found myself swooning over Lucy's outfits. Her ensembles are classic, of course, but many of the elements (sheer, lace, sweetheart necklines, polka dots, tea-length hems, etc.) seem to be particularly on-trend at the moment. So much so, that I easily could compile a look from several stores mimicking her signature looks. Read More
Beth Ditto, Bust cover-girl, front-woman for The Gossip, and overall feminist badass, has released a four-track solo EP with Simian Mobile Disco. After breaking virtually all the rules of the music industry, she has out-done herself again by proving she can successfully make it on her own. The full self-titled EP, released by label Deconstruction Records can be bought as a digital download or a physical 12" vinyl at Beatport, an online music store. A  full-length record is set to release in spring. Read More
