Shirley Maclaine as Coco

BY Laurie in General

Super excited to see Shirley Maclaine in the Coco Chanel bio pic on Lifetime this weekend and luckily this will not interfere with my 10 oclock date with Don Draper (Madmen!). I just love, love, love Shirley, have you ever read any of her new age books like Out on a Limb, or Dancing in the Light? She is a real gem, and I'm sure she'll do a great job with Ms. Chanel. Drill, Drill, Drill

BY Emily Rems in Feminism

Did anyone else out there read Eve Ensler's lacerating indictment of Sarah Palin this week in the Huffington Post ? If you missed it, here's a juicy excerpt: 'I don't like raging at women. I am a Feminist and have spent my life trying to build community, help empower women and stop violence against them. It is hard to write about Sarah Palin. This is why the Sarah Palin choice was all the more insidious and cynical. The people who made this choice count on the goodness and solidarity of Feminists. Read More

Cute Band Alert

BY Lisa in General

My brother is pretty awesome and always tips me off to rad bands way before I ever would've heard about them. This weekend he dished the goods: Dreamdate is a two-gal-one-guy trio from Oakland, California and I can't stop listening to the tracks on their MySpace page. Luckily there's six of em up so I haven't memorized all the words. Yet. It's sweet-dreams indie pop at its finest, lo-fi love songs that remind me of The Aislers Set (one of my fave bands of the early 00s), and the Raincoats, the perfect makings for an end-of-summer road trip soundtrack. Feeling burnt out from Fashion Week? Well here is a great way to top off the week,  Alison Goldfrapp is bringing her ethereal sounds to the states for a mini tour- I'll be going to the friday show at the ever so swanky Radio City. I have it on good authority that she puts on an amazing show, and the outfits should be interesting too. Read More

Duct Tape Fash!!!

BY Dawn in General

I was cruising the Girl Wide Web looking for some new online stores, when I stumbled upon Vanessa Jean . She makes handmade purses, wallets, and bags out of...DUCT TAPE. Some of the items are super cute. Have to admit...I'm totally impressed!!! I have duct tape in my apartment at all times. Read More
New Orleans has been dealt yet another blow this past week with Hurricane Gustav's visit to the Gulf Coast, but one of the best ways to help the city heal has always been contributing to its musicians. One of the most unique acts in the city, the New Orleans Bingo! Show, is visiting New York for three shows at Spiegelworld this week, and I can't think of a better setting to see this vaudeville/cabaret/carnival/lounge/performance art act. If you love old jazz, burlesque, theater, and of course, a good rousing game of bingo, you should be there. Read More

Luke Perry, Where Art Thou

BY Callie in General

Last night I watched the rerun of the 90210 premier and I have two questions: 1. Where the hell is Luke Perry, what are you doing with yourself that you don't want to relive your glory days in the hottest zip of the 90's? 2. That cute guy with the big teeth can just whisk dates all over California, so does that make him richer then Diddy ?   This isn't so much a question as a thought, the 16 year old that had the birthday party, Naomi, mad old face right? Totally in no way 16. Read More

Vampire Weekend

BY Laurie in TV

VS. HBO's True Blood airs this Sunday, and if you are into vampires, get ready for alot of uber violent shenanigans and sexual tension between the main characters played by Anna Paquin and Stepen Moyer. I saw the first two episodes and did not fall immediately in love, but its fun and I think I need to watch a few more episodes to get the full effect. The story is based on a book by Charlaine Harris, 'Southern Vampire,' and takes place in New Orleans where a Japanese company has invented synthetic blood, rendering the vampires 'safe' since they dont have to feed on humans.
