The real Betty Cooper just stood up, and her name is actually Betty Tokar Jankovich.  At 94 years old, she’s the star of “Archie’s Betty,” a new documentary chronicling the journey of one obsessive “Archie” comics fan (Gerald Peary) and one researcher (Shaun Clancy) in their search for the people who inspired the beloved characters. The search for Betty led the intrepid duo straight to Jankovich's home in Edison, New Jersey, where her perspective shed new light on the classic strip and its illustrator, Bob Montana – her former boyfriend. “Leave her on the hillside to die, she’s only a girl,” the waiters at her father’s restaurant would taunt anytime she cried as a child. Civil rights activist and feminist Grace Lee Boggs recalled these incidents in an interview with Democracy Now, citing them as the first time she realized the world was different for girls and boys. Looking back, she mused that it may have been in jest but, nevertheless, it was these careless statements that made her realize the world needed change. Read More

Recently, Meryl Streep made us all cry when she said that she is not a feminist….no, no, no, not a feminist, but a humanist. Now, we're cringing over photos of Streep and her Suffragette co-stars posing in white t-shirts that read, “I’d rather be a rebel than a slave.” While there’s nuance in the sentiment, there’s also something decidedly eerie about seeing an image of a white woman wearing a T-shirt printed with the word “slave.   My favorite new phenomenon is the book of essays by female comedians. I don't think it's an exaggeration to say my life would be empty without them. I’ve read Tina Fey’s Bossypants more times than I can count, I practically put my life on hold when Amy Poehler’s Yes Please came out, and Mindy Kaling’s Is Everyone Hanging Out Without Me (And Other Concerns) has gotten me through several hard times. So last week, when it was announced that the newest it-girl comedian Amy Schumer got a multimillion-dollar book deal with Simon & Schuster, I kind of lost it. Read More
