Tonight could be your lucky night, BUSTies. It’s World Book Night in the UK, Ireland, and the United States. The daytime will see UNESCO’s International Day of the Book, which falls yearly on April 23 in honor of Shakespeare and Cervantes’ deaths. When the sun sets though, self-appointed “givers” will take to the streets and pass out books to lucky unsuspecting passersby.
The givers registered with the World Book Night organization and received 20 specially-produced, not-for-resale paperbacks prior to tonight’s celebration. 30 books were chosen by the World Book Night committee and givers could request one book of their choosing to dispense. The list includes some of my personal favorites, like The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins, Just Kids by Patti Smith, and The Poisonwood Bible by Barbara Kingsolver.
This is a great initiative to get adults reading, and there’s something about the cloak-and-dagger intrigue that really sparks my curiosity.
There’s no way to find out where the givers will be, but I’m betting New York will have its fair share of volunteers. It’s all about being in the right place at the right time.
